Passport questions

Postby Beran » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:58 am

this is directed towards anyone who has recently gotten a US passport.

i had a passport forever ago that i cannot find now. i am going to need a new one for a planned trip to canada in march, but am not sure what i need or how long it is going to take. i haven't done any kind of passport stuff in ages, and id like some input from someone who has dealt with it recently, as im sure the stuff i remember from last time no longer applies.

i need to know what kind of documents i need, where i need to go, how much its going to cost and how long it will take.

thanks for the input.

Usually you can get everything you need done at the post office. you will need to go to a photo place and have them take passport portraits. but you will want to get on the ball it can take 6-8 weeks to get your passport.

They say it takes around 2 weeks, but it actually takes about a month to get taken care of, so I would start now.

You need to go to your local post office to apply for it.
I'm currently tracking down all the stuff you need.
What I recall off the top of my head was a state issued ID, your Social Security Card, and a proof of address.
There is more, but I can't find it on their website just yet :(

Well if you cant find the one that you got you need to report it as lost and then update all your information for when they replace it. Probably the easiest route to go.

Birth certificates work well too.

Considering that you have lost your current passport, you'll have to fill out these two forms, and bring them with you when you go to the post office:
An application for a new passport:
http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/fo ... 1_842.html
And a Statement regarding your lost passport:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ ... 4_845.html

They have a long list of things you can use as ID, check it out here:

you can also have it 'expedited' when you put in for it, mine took just a week to arrive after handing the paperwork off when I went to Newfoundland this last Summer. I believe it costs another 80 bucks or so if I remember correctly.
I did it all here at the courthouse in town.

i think im getting the card, it seems like the best option since im not going overseas. it looks like it will be faster and cheaper as well.

after calling around, it seems that neither of my parents has either my birth certificate or SS card, and my SS card fell apart like five years ago. great, something else i have to search for.

When I got mine, I went to the post office with my SS card, Birth Certificate, and old Passport, filled out some paper work, they took my picture there, and that was all it took [if I remember correctly]. It was a couple years [2003 or 2004?] ago that I got mine, but when I did, they suggested you give it 6 to 8 weeks, just in case it takes that long, because sometimes it does, and you don't want to end up not having it when you need to leave.

In the past year our family has gotten two for family members. Took about 10 days in Salem

Oregon does.

Good deal if you're not international. But Beran already stated he's going to get this, so this post is...

Also, you can apply at the city, if you don't want to go to the PO. My brother found that there was always a delay or a line at the PO, but he went over to the City of Tigard offices and got it finished in mere minutes.
