Want to display my German pride.

Postby FunkWeasel » Sat Aug 16, 2008 8:14 pm

Hello, you may remember me from the East German loadout topic, and while this post is similar, I feel it was different enough to post a separate topic about. I do not want to take up too much of the admins' time however, so if this topic should be combined with my older post, feel free to alter it to however you see fit. I don't want to annoy anyone.

So lets get down to it. I've always been fascinated with the German Army, "All Quiet on the Western Front" is my favorite book, I'm the Grandson of a Wermacht Machine gunner, and the cousin of a formerly serving West Kriegsmarine U-Boat crew member.

I feel obligated to show my heritage through airsoft. Pure-blood Americans dress up as SEALS and Marines, British dress up as SAS, so I want to be a German. I'm open to any time period WW1-Present day, as long as the type of soldier I portray is not SS or Gestapo. Anyways, WW2 and before are out of the question, because AEG's of weapons from the time period are few and far between.

Now for the questions:

1. I really want to wear Stahlhelm. I know the Stahlhelm was worn during WW1 and WW2, but was it used post-WW2 in the 50's and 60's?

2. What kind of camo should I be wearing? I know the Heer uses Flecktarn today, but what was used during the middle twentieth century?

3. A harder question, as I bet few of you have warn these: Are Jackboots comfortable?

Does the lack of laces make them slide on you? If Germany's been using them this long, they'd have to work, wouldn't they? Also, until which point were they phased out?

4. Finally, der gewehr, oder the rifle . Yes, I posted in the forums a while back looking for an AK, but I still can't decide what I want to use. I'm going to play Woodland at least 90% of the time, and unlike the Pacific Redwood forests, Maryland is dense and scrubby, so a long rifle is ill-advised (G3A3 I'm looking at you). I've been thinking MP5, G3A4, and Steyr AUG (Austrian yes, but used by Germany). G36 is out of the question. I hate it. I'm one for a lot of metal on a gun, and the G36 doesn't satisfy me. Not to mention it's too popular.
I'm striving to be unique, so I don't know if the MP5 would be worth it. Do a lot of people use the MP5? Would it even work in woodland? Or is it CQB only? I really want to stand out on the battlefield, I don't want to be a tacticool spec-ops guy with an M4. So if you have and weapons suggestions, feel free to enlighten me. My AEG budget is $400.

Wow, thank you for putting up with me for all that tyext. I tried to break it up so it wouldn't be such an eyesore. I really need the advice of a decorated airsoft community such as yourselves to help me out. I thank you in advance for your contributions.

Do you like any guns on that page? I think the CA33's look pretty cool, and it would almost certainly be unique. According to wikipedia, the CA33's are German. With your $400 budget, you could possibly get a German sidearm too, or some magazines, sling, or other accessories for a G3/HK33.

Yeah, I'll eventually be getting an HFC Mauser 712 Broomhandle so I can go "All Quiet on the Western Front" on some guys. As for CA33, that's a no-go. A guy I know got one, and the front half broke off a month later. I do however like the G3A4 folding stock...

Can anyone answer my boot and helmet question though?

http://www.kamouflage.net/country/00138.php postwar german camo patterns.

If you're going for any time period after WW2 you're going to need to ditch the stahlhelm. It was considered a symbol of German aggression and Germany distanced itself from it save for a few police, fire, and border units. Germany used a variant of the American M1 steel pot until the adoption of their kevlar helmets in the '90's.

My advice would be to pick a time period and study up on it.

A well fitting pair of broken in Jackboots are very comfortable.

Oh man... I really like the Stahlhelm...
Do you think I'd look stupid wearing one anyway? I'm only going to portraying Germany on free days. When I go to meets with my team, I'm going to wear their uniform. Would it look stupid wearing a Stalhelm and Jackboots with desert camo? Guys on my team wear Russian fur hats or berets, so I don't see why not...

Are you going for an accurate impression of a german soldier from a period in time, or just a mishmash hodgepodge of german stereotypes. Keep in mind this has been posted in the "Re-enactment/Historic Airsoft" topic, I can only assume you're going for accuracy in your loadout.

Honestly, do whatever you want, the hell with what anyone else thinks.

That's great advice thanks. I guess I am going for a hodgepodge, but there's nothing wrong with that is there? Sorry for posting this in the wrong forum
