Helmets are encouraged so that what the brotherhood wears at least slightly resembles power armor. You won't be shunned without one, but you'd look way cooler with a military-style helmet than anything else. Andy and Bax in Portland has always had very cheap replica PASGT helmets for around $20.

As much as even I hate them, using a paintball mask would help with the appearance.

Cheapo paintball masks or those wierd airsoft mesh masks would work perfectly for Brotherhood. Spray paint them metallic colors and superglue some hose on there and WHALAAAH! Done
