Suggest Support Weapons Here

Postby ScaredShooter » Thu Jan 27, 2011 9:42 am

Clear enough title?
Considering splitting the cost of a support weapon with 3 or 4 friends. We all have our own AEGs.

Unfortunately my knowledge of support weapons is almost nonexistent.
What are some high quality brands and models that can truly stand up to abuse and high ROF for sustained time? I'm searching for a solid gearbox of course, among other tough internals.
New is great, and if there are any must-have classified ads I'll take those recommendations too.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

mp5k with dual c-mag

In all seriousness though if you're buying a support gun have some money there for gearbox rebuilds and new mags. The autowinding mags on those tend to be finicky. You're probably going to tear your hopup bucking, burn up your trigger contacts, or jam a magazine in the first game.

High ROF should be the least important concern for you. You want consistency and battery efficiency.

I actually find a relatively low rate of fire more useful when using a support gun. BBs are BBs, and will get people to go to cover if it's at 600 rpm or at 1400 rpm. However, at 400 to 600 you cause less strain on your gun and you don't run out of ammunition as quickly, allowing you to give suppressing fire for a longer period of time - which, in the end, is more useful. Remember that a support gun is designed to support, not to be the kill everything.

Vickers 303. Best support weapon ever. You will however need a 7-8 man squad to carry the ammo and water for it.

Seriously though, I have had good experience with a couple of old A&K 249s. They weren't pretty, but they still worked well. Of course, those were so old I would bet that anything that is prone to break when stock had already been replaced.

It's probably best to shell out for a CA M249 or perhaps the new E1 M240B. Android bought an A&K M60 and it's broken so much that he's spent just as much, if not more, on buying and repairing the gun as it constantly breaks as he would have on a CA.

Great! Thanks very much all of you. Especially the 1337s bothering to post on my thread. Other people can please keep it coming with suggestions. I will definately take these words on consistency, ROF and expenses into consideration.
Agreed Fatcow, I'd rather have something that break less.

A G&P/CA M249/MK46 or maybe a CA RPK. I highly recommend avoiding the A&K support weapons...

The A&K is okay.

But the new E1 RPK 74 is beast as shit. If you go RPK. GET THE NEW E1.

I think I'm tempted towards Classic Army for Support. Not sure why, maybe it's a psychological message relayed through the name. If so, I could be falling for it.

As an RPK platform or M249? the M249 is great in CA form.

The M249. I don't really know anything about the RPK. The 249 is much heavier right? and would all events allow the RPK to be used as designated support?

Considering it is an LMG, I'm quite sure there will be no problem with you using an RPK.

Well I think the real RPK's are just used with 40rd mags and not a drum mag in real situations so it's somewhat inaccurate (correct me if I'm wrong) but most events allow it.

If performance and reliability are your top two criteria, I would go with the CA M249 MKII. It's running at about $400 right now at Airsoft Outlet, which is way less than they used to go for. I'd put that one over any other for bang for your buck, although the Echo1 RPK is nice, it's not as much gun and it's close to the same price.
