Taking the @#&*@!! flash hider off of an AK74S

Postby Nox » Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:23 am

I need to take the flash hider off of an Echo 1 AK74S so I can turn a barrel for it, but I can't figure out how to get the damn thing off!
The AK's of old had a screw beneath the front sight to take the assembly off, but this one appears to be pinned on...the flash hider unscrews counter clockwise, but it is being a massive phony pony!

Anyone have any tips tht I can use?
Thanks!

If you link to the actual gun I can be more specific, but in general those get glued on, so heating the front with boiling water, then unscrewing it is probably your best bet...just don't burn yourself!

Are you sure it has right hand threads? I've never seen an AK that did. Also, in addition to boiling it, there might be a set screw just under the little pin on the front sight.

If it is glued I use a heat gun (super hair dryer).

look for another screw located at the back of the flash hider OR an adhesive was used and you need to figure out what it is. Have you called the manufacturer/where you bough it from.

on all my AKs ive had theres a little push pin that you have to press while turning the flash hider CW or CCW, whatever yours is, it should be located on top near the front sight or on the bottom side of the hider and it should come off, none of mine had any type of adhesive on it.

Naw the E1 AK74s are glued and pinned, you cant get to the pin because they put glue on them, and then assembled it and it hides the pin. Jessie told me that he could try and heat it and take it off, but it sometimes screws it up. So I just ended up leaving it alone.

Mine was on a bit crooked so the BB's were hitting the flash hider when I was shooting it, so we just ground the little bit it was hitting out of the way and it works fine. Good luck getting it off and if you do let us know what you did. Other than that it shoots great and has been a nice AEG for the price.

Wait, are we talking about an AKs74u here? An AKs74 you should just be able to unscrew COUNTER clockwise, while the AKs74u is the shortened variant and you will need to push that little pin in, and then unscrew it. The flash hider itself actually screws onto a counter clockwise to clockwise adapter in this case, so in theory you should be able to remove it either way, but going counter clockwise will remove the whole thing, which is what you want.

Just remember, the threads underneath are VERY FRAGILE and I have seen more than one AKs74u had the flash hider and threads break off.

Dremel tool cut along the top and bottom of the flash hider, so you have 2 halves. Insert screw driver into the cut you made, and rotate the driver 90 degrees. If it's glued, that should pop the bond.

Thanks for the info guys, it was a CCW turn with a sneakily hidden allen set screw that was unfortunately found *after* removing it and halfway fornicating the threads on the front sight..

Sneaky thread-raping bastards. What are you going to put on there?
