This seems like kind of a silly and moot question but... I digress.
I'm going to introduce you to a little military acronym called METT-C (Pronounced met t c).
M-Mission
E-Enemy
T-Time
T-Terrain
C-Civilians on battlefield.
Except for that last one, all of these apply in ANY situation. Your average distance will depend upon METTC. Your mission could be to simply find the enemy and kill them, you'll get as close as you can as safely as you can and engage them. However, in certain situations I've fired at extreme ranges just to put out grazing/cover fire to assist making movement. I wouldn't say there is an "Average" distance because, as I'm trying to emphasize, your contact depends on METTC.
So, I hope that helps, I know it doesn't exactly answer your question, but that's the most realistic answer I can think of.
"What do you want for Christmas Little boy?"
"A RANGER TAB MOTHERF**KER!"
