Do Shrikes count as support weapons?

Postby ScaredShooter » Wed Aug 17, 2011 9:43 pm

Will the community allow the use of boxmags with dealios such as this?

What are the parameters on what weapons are allowed auto-winding boxmags? Obviously SAW M249 weapons are accepted, M60s, etc.

But RPKs are usually recognized as support guns.. Which is weird to me; they seem like AKs that are slightly bigger and sport drum mags.

Is there some magic weight requirement? A scale of how legit versus ridiculous the gun would be for support squad use?

I don't understand!

The community doesn't allow every child with an auto-winding m4 mag to have 2400 rounds on tap for good reason, but what if I fork out $720 for a shrike kit? Will I still be told no?

Btdub I have a CA249 :)

RPKs are considered support weapons in airsoft because that's their real world role. IRL, they're built differently than AKs to do the job of a support weapon. Shrikes are not widely used; same case as the IAR. I just don't think it's a great idea, and I've gone down the "build a unique support weapon" road before.

I'd allow Shrikes and IAR's at my games.

@Junto: Yeah, yeah understand. That makes good sense.
@Catch: That's chill.

'Twould be fun indeed to have an IAR or Shrike, maybe this Stoner..

Think an ICS GALIL w/ wood handguard ("support" version) would be acceptable at AP events with an RPK drum?

I like mp5ks with grenade launchers, bipods, bayonetts, magnified optics, and drum mags.

Back to your Galil question, the ICS version that has the bipod and carry handle isn't really a support weapon, just a beefed up rifle. You could use it as such, but slapping a drum mag in and calling it a support weapon isn't really accurate.

Personally, I'd get that new G&P Mk23. It'll be cheaper than buying a shrike kit and not as ugly ;)

Most game coordinators are pretty reasonable. If it's significantly harder to handle than an AEG, has a drum magazine semi-permanently attached, they'll probably let you run it.

Really, what makes the whole RPK / L86 thing work and the IAR not is that there is a significant amount of bulk added to the parent rifles and the modifications aren't so easy you can just turn an AK into an RPK because you feel like running a drum that day.

Jewish Ninja: Have you handled any of them? I hear they've got some shearing issues in the middle of the body. I really like how it's designed by the odd report of spotty metalwork like that is keeping me from trying it.

Don't go for a shrike. There are fields which really follow by the LMG rules and even the MG36 doesn't count at places as a support weapon. Shrikes cost too much and you can just get a cool 249 or something like that if you want a support gun.

Then again, they might let you use it because like John_234 said, most game coordinators are reasonable.

A shrike is a legitimate belt fed weapon, and irl is used as a support weapon.

Compared to a MG36 which is not a belt fed weapon, and never got past the prototype stage, it is a LMG (the Shrike, not MG36).
