Exactly what I told my friend when he started ranting about getting ripped off. That's why I only trade in person.

You can all solve this kinda of crap by trading in person.

Yes but USPS investigative/ postal fraud division will not even look at something this small (have worked with em in past). Unfortunately small time stuff does not pass the threshold for action. Same for Secret service on counterfeit money scams. Unless you got the big fish, I.E. the one with the plates, it was a waste of time to even contact them. USPS is looking for the serial, big time operations that scam, hundreds or thousands of people. As Matt was saying, unless you know someone, or conduct the deal face to face , or have money in hand before shipping , you are taking a huge risk in doing this type of deal. Same with "KWA...And others..."
and
"Slykilla"

KWA has my M203 and shells. Nothing in return. No contact.
Slykilla has my G&P RAS II and 6 magazines. Apparently I traded it for a KA-BAR, worth $45. No contact.

I have done 1 deal through the mail off of craigslist. I recieved the item first, then sent money back. I talked to the guy by email, text, by phone, verified as much info as i could, got address' googled his name, found his business, got alternate numbers, and felt half way okay with the trade.

In the end it all went fine. I also gave him as much as i got so he would feel good about sending the items first.

Be smart and don't trust anyone. Expect that if you ship first or at the same time, that you will never receive anything in return.

Made a trade with a guy across the country. He shipped the parts here and then I shipped the parts there. Everything went smooth for me, but he was a respectable member of a community, so I think something can be said for common sense..

Edited for clarity:

If I'm going to do a trade, it's {f}ace to face, or nothing. And if I'm selling, I want the other guy to check it out and make sure everything works to their satisfaction before I leave with their money.

Google maps shows a street view. Doesn't look like that far a drive. And I'm sure the local police department is within a few miles of the location if you need to swear a complaint out. Not sure if you can do a small claims court case here or if you have to go there. If you can do it here, that means the other guy has to pay for gas to show up at the hearing. Not sure what you have to do to get the summons served, though.

I mean, if you have good feedback on several boards, cross-nation trading shouldn't be a problem. I just concluded a trade with a gentleman in Virginia, everything went fine. Just gotta pick your transactions wisely.

I would strongly advise against a trip and a face to face with this person. It will end badly. Best case the person will have a BS story and make promises that will not be kept , just to get rid of you. Worst case,it will get physical, and someone, maybe you will go to jail. If you involve others, you can make it into a conspiracy on top of the original beef. The real world is not the Sopranos where you "make someone an offer they cannot refuse". What you are probably dealing with is a scam artist who makes their money doing shady deals or a drug addict who has had to move on from ripping off his family ( the next step in the life of a drug user).

Now for what you can do, If you can get a positive ID on the person, go to the county clerk in your county, and get a small claims action initiated( the clerk can help) its pretty simple. The Sheriff's office in the county where the respondent lives will serve them and a court date will be set. Likely the person will not show and you will get a default judgement ( you are not dealing with someone who's motto is "honor as a way of life"). Basically you are back where you started, that is trying to get blood from a turnip. I am not sure what the dollar amount involved is, so you will have to decide if it is worth the effort.
As I indicated above, this is going to be a life lesson, you just paid tuition for a semester in the school of hard knocks. Don't feel bad, almost everyone has done it, including me.
One of the worst cases I ever dealt with, the plaintiff, took a gun along just for protection mind you, to collect some money owed, the respondent called the cops .....short story, the plaintiff ( could be you) got a nickel ( 5 yrs) in the joint. This is a worst case scenario, but I am using it to illustrate how badly this can go. This is not a place you want to go...... some input for your consideration. You decide.
