VFC questions

Ok, so I have been considering purchasing a VFC SCAR-L (Carbine version) with the trades. I think its called the STD, at least that's what ASGI calls it. I have read several forums on the SCARs and it seems like they are pretty good. I also have heard that VFC makes a set of gears that are so called "self-shimming" and that's really what I'm asking about, are these gears good? Do they accually "self-shim"? will they hold up to a 11.1 lipo? Do the SCARs have them? I've looked around on AP about them but couldn't find any information on them.

I have another question regarding battery installation in the SCAR's stock. Does the cheek piece lift up far enough to install the battery, or is there some other way? Is it a small or large type connector? will the stock fit a large type battery?

The SCARs do have them and they're fine, even at ~25rps.

Recently bought one , the butt "pad" removes with a pin and it takes a 9.6 mini std connector (tamiya?)

The self shimming gears are basically useless. I opened mine up a short while after I got it to change the spring, and the self-shimmed gears are "shimmed" by using springs that look like they were taken out of a clicky-pen. That being said, yes, they will work with a LiPo just about as good as any other stock gun, but it's something to think about replacing.

The battery is installed in the stock by removing the butt-plate, and sliding it in. I can fit a 1800 MaH 11.1v LiPo in the stock, along with 6 wires, and an Extreme-fire MOSFET, with the stock at the #3 position. It comes stock with a small type connector, but I would strongly recommend making the switch to deans ASAP.

I wanted to change the FPS, it was shooting at around 350. when I got it, which is what it should've been, since it was before they made them shoot ~420 out of the box.

Ok, so with that information I'll want to downgrade it a little bit when I buy it? Since you've opened it up, does it have a regular M4/M16 style hop-up, or its own special kind?

If you want to play at most games in the NW, then yes you need to bring it down to under 400 FPS. I was just going off the chrono reading that ASGI did on the brand new model, theirs might have come a little hot from the factory, you should chrono your model before you open it up, just in case it's under 400.

If you end up opening it, be careful of the selector switch system, it's hard to get back together, and if you do it wrong you can strip the selector plate.

They make it special so that the lower receiver can slide forward, then down from the upper just like the real-steel.

The VFC SCAR series is the best bet if your looking for a SCAR (either L or H). I've had a CA and Dboys SCAR-L and a VFC SCAR-H and the VFC was my favorite. I had no issues running my VFC stock, but I never hooked up an 11.1v lipo to it. I'd also suggest switching it to deans just to make it simpler.

The hop-up chamber is pretty tight and I couldn't really fit a Madbull blue bucking into the hop-up so I went back to the stock bucking when I upgraded the barrel.

I'd also HIGHLY suggest taking it to a professional if you want to get any gearbox work done (any brand) as the selector system is a pain in the everything to setup correctly. I tried working on my own once and it ended in tears and cursing, though gearboxes are witchcraft to me.

Also, be mindful of pulling out the pins on both the stock and the receiver as the capture pins like to jump off and get lost in the grass/mud/whatever you happen to be standing it.

If you plan on leaving it stock, save a new barrel, it'll run just great. I regret selling mine, and hope to get another down the road.
