the stigma against box mags.

Postby Lukens » Sun May 20, 2012 2:51 pm

Ive attended a few games in the past few months, and have learned that most "veteran" players have a kind of hate for box mags when applied to assault rifles. I see the hate on the forums as well. Im not saying im going to use a box mag, seems to unwieldy to me, not to mention un-realistic, but why so you guys all hate them so much? any specific reason?

Garret, this makes me want to buy a box mag just to spite you.

Yes, as long as its attached to a SAW or LMG of sorts, its ok. But if its an assault rifle, you get hated on a bit, as far as ive seen.

If you want an 100 round C-mag for your M4/M16 that's fine with me, I just don't want to see someone rolling up with a 5000 square mag

I think it's to do with degrees of realism. People hate on high-caps, too, because they're noisy. ALSO, and primarily, because a 14 year old kid with a 400 rd. high cap will just hold the trigger until he's used all his rounds, thereby pissing off every player who cares at all about his ammo.

A box mag is just the logical extension of that and, accordingly, a logical extension of the hate goes with it. i.e. an exponential amount.

Most of the people that hate them being used on assault rifles are the people that run support weapons. If you let people use drum mags on assault rifles there is no point in having a LMG.

So a box mag may be functionally unrealistic.. I agree. But other things in airsoft are unrealistic too.. like respawning over and over in a days skirmish. By that measure of logic should we hate and abandoned all that is not MIL -SIM realisitic... of course not! we Airsofters have box mags because THAT is a support role. besides, its FUN isnt it? ---Thats WHY WE DO IT.. and not allowing box mags in a skirmish is pointless because then you might as well the silencers grenade launchers and frag grenades too. My advice is to Respect your fellow airsofters choice of play style and loadout equipment and just have fun on the field no matter what.

Yeah, it's totally unrealistic that the enemy doesn't actually bleed out and die when I shoot him. That's why we should all use box mags.

But all joking aside - the reason why people have a thing against box mags is because the capacity limitations on weapons make the game more dynamic and more fun. If everyone has thousands of rounds and sprays at everything that moves - we have no squad dynamics. There's no rifleman, no saw gunner, no DM, no sniper - just a bunch of people with 1000s of rounds spraying at everything. That's more about shoot-em-up than mil-sim, more like paintball than Airsoft. It's not because we're a bunch of assholes, we want the game to be fun too. Having a variety of weapon platforms with different capacity helps us do that. So, respect our choice to want a game that has a realistic dynamic, that's what makes it fun for us.

We've been there and done that with allowing box mags as support weapons. People abused the privilege and we got way too many "support weapons" on the field. It unbalances the game. Obviously if you disagree, you don't have to attend the events with restrictions. That's the whole reason we put those restrictions in place, to filter the audience we want for the specific event.

While I have no problem with hi-caps, box mags are what noobs want to play with, and than whine and moan when they are out of ammo because they have no trigger discipline. I have made the switch to mid's and as well as the three round burst feature MOSFET, and I have found the sport much more rewarding because I have to think about tactics, I have to listen for my mag to be empty, as well as how many full mags do I have left.
