the only thing that should be on the gears is just white lithium grease or non petroleum based grease. you need it on there so that the gears don't grind on each other and wear off and it also helps decrease friction in between the parts.
claiming that cleaning the gears off will help with performance is a irresponsible claim that will miss lead people. also most gears are made out of steel, cleaning them off without some residual grease and exposing it to water will cause them to rust
Code, to be fair, cleaning the gears of crappy china-man grease could help the gun run better. However, if you do this multiple times, you wear down the parts in the gearbox by the simple act of assembly/disassembly of the gearbox. For an initial relube and shim of a china-man gearbox, sure, go ahead and sonic clean them. For routine maintenance, it's unnecessary and could result in increased wear.
