Legality question

Postby TMiller » Mon Nov 09, 2009 5:12 am

I took some 12 gauge #8 birdshot shells and made five primer-only shotgun shells that were loaded with five 6mm bbs each with a paper wadding. When fired out of a shotgun, Its slightly louder than a breakbarrel pellet gun, has no recoil and The bbs travel around 30 feet max before hitting the ground.

I can already bet its banned to use at AP games because of safety reasons and risk of an accident, but my question is.
Can these be fired legally in a backyard?

Legal anywhere you can shoot firearms. :)

Illegal anywhere you can not shoot them.

I concur, it's using gunpowder as a propellant so it would technically fall under the category of a firearm, and since it actually CAN be "modified" to shoot real ammo, its not considered legal for airsofting purposes. also, it would need an orange tip.

To much chance of a 16 year old glass licker thats not supposed to have access to a shotgun without parental supervision to toss a real shell in on "accident"

BTW on a side note.

A 6mm .43 gram bb fits perfectly seated in a Primer only 5.56 case, Should I bring My AR to the next game? Its almost as loud as a supressed AR ( doesnt eject and strip tho)

So thats a 6.63 grain projectile, Hmmm Fun times.

Basically, you're firing what would be legally termed Less Lethal or possibly alternative ammunition from a firearm. All relevant restrictions related to firearms would thus be in effect.

I would think that there would be a good way to warn and caution without insulting and accusing.

It might be unwise, but he asked a specific question: Where is it legal. That was answered by Joe. He already demonstrated that he knows it would be illegal at an airsoft game. Many other people have thought of this before. Real airsoft manufacturers have pursued this before. It may not be the best use of his time, but it's certainly not the worst thing he could be doing.

Except that runs on gas, not a shotgun shell.

Are you serious? Do not modify ammunition.

Too much of a risk. :learn:

There are many young men who 'modify ammunition'. Some by reloading and changing the amount of power they use. Is loading a high velocity load more or less dangerous than loading a zero powder load?

Are you serious? Let people live. If he wants to, and he understands where it is legal and isn't legal, let him take those risks which he willingly chooses to place upon himself.
