Name that gearbox!

Postby Jester316 » Thu Jan 07, 2010 11:33 pm

So, I recently acquired 2 gearboxes as payment for working on another gun. However, I can't figure out what type of gearbox it is. It looks like a version 2 in the back, but a version 3 everywhere else. It doesn't use a full motor cage like the version threes either. If you look at the place the motor enters the gearbox, there are some weird lines there too. Those almost seem like a channel for the wires to run through. Can anyone help identify this? I'm going to salvage as many parts as I can (gears, springs,...), but I'd like to know exactly what type of gearbox/what gun it goes to. They were bought on ebay as Classic Army version 2's, but I know that they are not CA's, and are not Version 2's.

It kinda looks like a Version 8 used in Type 89's.

Edit: Never mind, V8's are a lot bigger.

Can I get a close up of the upper front motor cage piece, and a shot from the rear, and other side please.

Wow, that was a lot faster then I thought it would be. That is exactly what it is. The motor's even look the same.

Liquid, do you still want me to get those photos? Or were they just to help with identifying?

Looks like a V2 with a funny thing on the bottom that might be to fit a less common gun (like some off-brand G3 or something). The hole where an M4 mag release pin goes through is present, too. Have you tried to remove the motor cage thing and see if there's 2 or 4 threaded holes underneath where a grip would normally screw into a V2?

I really doubt that's a CA box, though. I don't think CA gearboxes are pot metal, although I haven't taken apart a CA Sportline, either. Also, the bearing/bushing holes look like 6mm (although I admit I'm just eyeballing them in perspective to the picture), while every CA I've ever seen has 7mm or even 8mm holes.

On the other hand, I could be completely wrong about everything.

well like ghost posted in the airsoft thread he links up, it's a 'Version 2.5" gearbox, which appears to be a bitched version mix of a 2 and 3.
A cursory search on google tells me this gearbox is specific to the gun in Ghost's thread - this might be useless to you in a normal aftermarket gun unless the gun or gearbox is modified.

That's an initial observation however, more extensive information might change things.

It seems as if the gearbox will be useless. However, I can scavenge some parts from it. The gears are XYT gears (which I've never had an issue with). Screws and various springs are all there, as are the shims. The wiring has been physically cut, and the trigger switches are all kinds of upsidedown. I have no idea if the piston/piston head/cylinder/cylinder head are compatible with other gear box versions. Oh well, not that big of a deal. I needed to increase my number of spare parts.

It looks very similar to a V2. All the internals should be compatible. It doesn't make sense to have proprietary internals...

You might be able to use it as a V2 if you can remove the motor cage as Nic said. You might need to drill and tap some holes though...

It looked to me like a V2 with a cut V3 motor cage to me. I wanted to see if there was anything on the other side I could identify with.
