Classic Army LWRC Double Feeds

Postby Matt » Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:01 am

Anybody else have a double feeding issue with an LWRC?

I've got an LWRC PSD, using "green box" 75rd PMAGs. At first, I thought maybe it was finicky about the ammo quality, so I got some high precision bios (Madbull) and tried those, although it seemed a little bit better it still double fed every once in a while.

I'm assuming it's related to the hopup chamber not holding the BB in place because I've had them roll out the barrel before. I've searched for the hopup unit by name and trying to find if there's replacement but I'm having trouble pinpointing what kind it is or if it's proprietary or what... any ideas?

Quite frustrating that a $525 AEG has such an "amateur hour" problem.

I would try the Magpul PTS branded mags to troubleshoot. I have some you can borrow. If it's not that, I might replace the bucking. I have an LWRC too, and it's the best AEG I have owned.
I do hope that after all this discreditable shuffling we may be taken into action. It has a wonderful way of reconciling a man with himself: and with everybody else, sometimes. - 1st Lt. James Dillon

Looks like I've got the STAR PMAGs. Are those crap?

Yes but they can be modified to work more reliable.

I've fixed so many of those mags that I've lost count

So how do you go about fixing them?

The fix is more related to jams but it did improve feeding as well but not specifically double feeding. I would try different mags first to see if its the mags or not. I would also change the bucking to a blue mad bull one. The CA buckings have always sucked.

Here is a video I found that shows how to make them better... I don't take the follower off, I use a small amount of heat shrink tubing to make the bb follower stiffer (not so much wiggle)

I had this problem on my ECR-4. The stock mag and my PTS mids both had double feeding issues.

The problem for me was an incorrect combination of air nozzle and tappet plate.
Classic army's tappet plate is modified version 2 with a curved surface on the gear interface. My air nozzle was shorter than a standard V.2 as well.

A standard Version 2 tappet plate seemed to cure it for me. You may want to try a longer air nozzle as that most likely is the more elegant solution to this problem.

I hope you have better luck extracting the gearbox than I did.

are you hearing any back wind when you let off the trigger? if your arl isnt catching it will also cause your gun to double feed. and ive never seen the magazine be the reason for a gun double feeding, not feeding enough, yes, but not over feeding.

No, I'm not hearing any back winding. I would also be hesitant to believe the magazine or the follower inside would cause double feeding, but it's no harm to borrow somebody's mag and at least try. I like the nozzle suggestion, to me that would seem like the logical reason why a second BB could enter the chamber.

I'd suggest reassembling the hopup unit yourself, maybe with a new bucking, before looking at the gearbox as the culprit. The chances of your double feeds being caused by parts that were manufactured off spec are very very slim.

This problem was noticed for me after my hop-up was repaired by Spartans techs. The drum style hop-up that they include with these is quite good, and I don't see how a cheap hop-up rubber could cause this.

It gets better and better. I went to tear it down at look at the barrel/hopup, reached for my charging handle and noticed it wasn't there. Can't find it anywhere, I'll bet it's on the ground somewhere at George Air Force Base. Awesome.

How did that happen?

Good luck finding a replacement for that. CA EBB AR's don't use a standard charging, but are closer to GBBR charging handles.
I hope something like this:

will work. Hopefully other GBBR charging handles will work as well.

It seems when I named my ECR-4 the "Black Devil" it was a little to appropriate.
