AEG not performing as expected

Postby Alien_Hunter » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:37 pm

I bought a Dboy AK74. I added a 6.03, 500mm barrel, G&P rubber bucking and an H nub. I was expecting a BIG boost in accuracy. However it only slightly outranges a stock CYMA shooting .2 bb's.

It did seem to gain some FPS, but the range just isn't there. It shoots well to about 120 feet, where the CYMA shoots 100. I'm looking for some possible culprits. The bucking may still be oily, I needed silicone to get it in. Using .25 grams. Estimated FPS with .2 is 430-450 tops.

You may not notice a big increase in FPS, range, or accuracy. Most AEG's only hit 120-150' with any sort of accuracy anyways. Typical airsoft engagements are far shorter than people think...

Also remember that you are shooting a spherical object out of a non-rifled barrel... Accuracy will be just slightly better than crap on a good day.

Might be a compression issue as well. Teflon tape mod might help, as well as shimming the barrel a bit.

The G&P bucking isn't that amazing either, it's pretty average in my experience. I'm assuming the gun was a standard length AK74 to start with, so your cylinder balancing should be okay.

Unless you have put a higher powered spring in there, its not shooting 450fps. Probably more around 380 w/.2

Anyways. Try heavier BB's. and fiddle with the hopup a bit as well. Ive found .28 & .3g bbs to work great at the 360-420fps range.

and unless you get rather exotic, most buckings/nub are gonna yield similar results, so dont expect huge changes in range/accuracy..

Replace the crap stock hop up unit if you haven't already. I use a Pro-Win knock off in my Dboys AK and it made a huge difference in accuracy.

A better bucking will help as well. Better doesn't mean Madbull. They make some great parts, but their TBBs and buckings have been rather meh in my experience. Some of the best buckings I've used have been Modify and Guarder.

Another suggestion would be cleaning your TBB. I've gotten new ones that were kinda gross on the inside. A swab with silicone oil ( not gun lube) down the barrel couldn't hurt. You'll wanna run a mag or 2 through after doing this to get rid of any excess oil that's on the bucking. You'll want to do this ASAP so your bucking doesn't absorb all the oil and get all wonky.

I've got an SRC metal hop up. Kalash buckings are made of cardboard IIRC. I wanted to try the 'flat hop' but the barrel's window is very short so there be no point.I'll look for some heavier BBs.

You don't need a bigger window to get good results from flat hop. You're thinking R-hop.

So. . . Flat hop might be viable? I'm going to swap out the H nub and try the regular one when I get BBs tomorrow.

The Baton Ryusoku from Modify is a smooth bucking. There's no nub on the inside, making it much simpler to install with a flat hop or r hop.

prometheus also makes a smooth bucking.
for anything over 375fps, i use .28g bb's, plus i have my own r-hop style mod, only i inject a urethane rubber directly into the hop-up window.

Do not get the Prommy straight bucking, the feed lips are too long for most hop units, and I have yet to find a gearbox where it can be installed without causing jams constantly.

The Baton Ryusoku is probably a better choice.

I think it works just fine. I was shooting off of the deck with some friends into some trees and at 300' it was hitting redwoods. Not in any consistent way but I think that it improved the accuracy and range 150%. CASE CLOSED.
