Buy it or Not...?

Discussion about sniper rifles or bolt-action.

Buy it or Not...?

Postby DevilPup93 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 8:54 pm

Ok, so I'm looking at purchasing this Tokyo Marui L96 from a classified ad on Airsoft Organization of South Carolina's website.

The gun externally is all in great shape, however the internals not so much. Here is the quote from the ad.

This gun is great. With a .40g bb and 300 fps, it gets up to around 170ft of range. I have put over $655 into the gun, It has 2 40 round magazines, KM 6.03 inner barrel, Laylax L96 AWS high pressure piston, Laylax L96 AWS spring guide, and an NC Star 3-9x40 scope. The only thing wrong with the gun, is 3 screws on the feeding system that are messed up. 1 screw, on the top, is bored out. The other 2 screws that are holding it in place are bent slightly to were they wont go in all the way. Thats an easy fix, just go to your local hardware store and they will match the screws up and boom, good as new.

Here he is talking about the problems that are occurring with the gun:

It will feed one bb, maybe two, and then since the feeding system is not held down all the way it jams. Then you will have to take the mag out, pull the bolt back again and close it. Then fire the bb. All you would need to replace is 3 screws that hold down the feeding system.

And...here are the pictures he sent me over the email of the screws he is talking about:

Now my questions for all of you, since you probably have more experience with this kind of stuff. Would this be considered a good buy and should I take the plunge in trusting that it is only the 3 screws that can be replaced with supposedly "ease".

I'm not changing my mind on the type of bolt action platform to use, I have decided on the Tokyo Marui L96, so please don't convince me otherwise. I have the money to buy it from the guy but just am skeptical on getting it in working order.

Thanks alot guys and gals!

Don't buy it, man. Repair parts for that gun aren't readily available. If the issue turns out to be more complex you're up a shit creek.

They seem to be pretty readily available on RedWolf and other websites, however, do you think those 3 screws can be REALLY fixed by getting replacements at a Home Depot or something?

When buying something used if a person tells you it is an easy fix it generally only is if they have fixed it.

You should be able to find the metric screws to replace them at Ace hardware or home depot. I'd make him replace them though, and show me a functioning gun before I would be willing to buy it. If it were me. :)

Alright, I'm planning on talking the guy down in price some because paying $350 for this is kinda ridiculous since it's broken, even with some upgraded parts. However if not, I can just buy a brand new stock TM L96 off of some Hong Kong retailer for the same price.

i highly doubt its just 3 screws when it comes to feeding issues, but its your money and your decision

I hope it's not more than that. AK platforms have the same kind of problem where if the 2 screws in the magwell come loose or fall out, it won't feed, this might be the same kind of case with the L96. Reviews say that the only con on this gun is the feeding ramp so idk if it has more to do with the insides of that and not just the screws.

Yea so at this point, if I can't talk the guy down more, then I'll just buy a brand new L96.

If its truly only the screws are stripped out, then just get a tap and dye set and re-thread the screws.

But..... buyer beware :)

If you have $300 to spend just get something like this.

Saves you money, time, and worry, but not the weight of L98 geesh.
