My general policy with comms is that if I REALLY need them, I use my nice Earpro with the out-line from my Motorola plugged in to it, and just use the radio itself as a mic, the mics built in to the Motorolas and Midlands tend to be better than their external mics. If being silent isn't essential (if I'm leading a squad, for example) i just use the radio itself.
Costco has 2-packs of fairly nice motorola radios for $40-60 most of the time, they're usually in the sporting goods, but i've found them in electronics. Frys and the internet have the good midland sets, just avoid any set of Midlands that costs less than like $50 as if it had the black plague, some horrible form of influenza, SARS, and various other horrible things all at once, there are two distinct levels of midland FRS/GMRS radio, and you do *not* want the low-end ones.
