Would a kill-flash work on a flashlight?

Postby Alien_Hunter » Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:06 pm

Ok oxymoron time, if I put a kill flash over a flashlight (presumably an LED of 50+ lumens), would it make it harder to see the 'glow' coming from the light at the lens if you were facing it from the side? I thought a kill-flash was used for this purpose as well as the other.

That's not a completely crazy idea. "Blackout lights" have been in use on military vehicles for a long time. They are designed to provide enough light for navigation while minimizing a vehicle's light signature. I suppose a killflash would work, but a hood might be simpler and cheaper.

Im not sure what it is that you are trying to achive with the kill flash on a light. Reducing glint durring daytime use? When in use, reguardless of method you try to use you will get a cone effect pointing directly back to the source. Not to mention when using the light at night you will be needing that side splash to help identify threats to the left and the right giving you more area coverage. This is exactly what you want. There is a science to low light operations and the use of light to dominate a threat. It's a type of operation few work on regularly or do correctly let alone understand the fundimentals behind it.

Lets go into this.
I am particularly interested because I like night games and one had an incident where it was pitch black and I had 2 guys with me and we encountered some other players ahead of me and basically we played with our flashlights and tried to shoot each other. It was kinda sad. I'm doing some light searching right now but can't find much.

Blue photon LED's are the shiznit. But I'm saying 'what if I just want to see 20 feet in front of myself without calling to much attention' and the reason I ask about a kill flash is because if it seems like you'd have to see it dead on to identify the source.

Eat more carrots so you can see better in the dark.

I will probably just have to buy (and then return ;) ) a kill flash and see if this works. It does seem impractical, but not useless. The British only suggested carrots to keep radar a secrets. Bet the Natzi's were thrilled. :D

Actually, Vitamin A kicks a$$...
A lack of Vitamin A has been proven to cause visual deficiencies. Call it fat-soluble night vision...

You want a filter, not a kill flash. A killflash is to stop people from possibly seeing the reflection of light off the glass in your optics.

If you turned a kill flash to the side, like this,

It seems like it would be harder to pick out the source of light.
