Shoguns, helmet distress marker

Postby shogun » Sat Feb 12, 2011 12:13 am

i decided my helmet needed a distress marker, and it needed to work, so i took my G&P distress marker speed loader, and made it real!

Materials
18 AWG wire, 2 small steel plates, cr123a battery, M249 trigger switch, CREE multi function 300 lumen bulb, G&P distress marker speed loader, soldering iron, glue, velcro, awesome helmet.

I used the soldering iron to melt out the insides of the speed loader(yes it smelled awful) I glued the bulb in and wired it to the m249 switch that i attached to the body of the loader with 2 screws. Again using the soldering iron i attached the steel plates to the body of the loader to make a battery holder. the actual external switch was made with the dummy switch that came with the loader. It has 5 settings, low, medium, bright, fast strobe, and slow strobe. i added some velcro and a lanyard to attach it to my helmet.

edit* damnit i cant get my images to work here i give up, they work fine on the sota forums. see pics here

i already had all the parts on hand, but if you were to buy the parts.

Marker loader 20-25$
Cree bulb 20$
wiring 8$ for a 50 ft roll
micro switch 8$ or less
misc screws and foam 1$

the filter does actually work as an IR filter, its just not up to the task of filtering out a 300 lunmen LED, so im going to eventually make a new filter so only IR light makes it through the filter

Or switch out your white LED for an infrared one. They're not that expensive, under $10 each

So, I guess if you like to do things yourself, this would be a good project, but the costs associated would purchase you a real one off ebay. Looks good either way.

you definitely dont need a 300 lumen strobe bulb to build one =P

50-75$ used on ebay seems to be the going rate before shipping, and 120+ for new.

maybe ill buy a real one some day, but considering i have the stuff to build more.. i might just go for a version 2!
