Custom with off the shelf parts?

Postby icebullet » Sun Aug 28, 2011 7:25 pm

Can something truly be called custom if it was created with off the shelf parts?

Not to encite a riot or anything.. I just wanted to hear people's opinions on whether or not it would be correct for this forum.

as long as you use those parts to make something new then it is considered custom
and why?

No real reason, I was looking around the Custom Projects and really saw things that were serious mods.

Its your custom combination, but that doesn't mean the gun is custom.

Anybody else could make it with the same parts.

technically that could mean that no gun is really custom since you can buy those parts and make the same thing, even with some of the most varying items, you can go behind and buy those items and do it again...
or am I totally misunderstanding that comment?

can't be 'custom' until you apply the jbweld.

I can glue in some sorbo to correct AoE and call it custom by that definition. I kinda consider anything custom if you didn't get it pre assembled.

I'm talkin about using built up jbweld to make something you can't get off the shelf, like a HK21E. "Some assembly required" isn't custom either.

I do consider a self cut, fitted and glued into place sorbo pad on a piston head a custom part.

Too weird. I was just thinking to myself the other day: "it annoys me when people customize their gun with off-the-shelf external parts and call their gun 'custom.' 'Customized' is not the same as 'custom.' Anybody can install drop-in upgrades. It takes skill to modify something or create a part from scratch and have the modified/fabricated part actually work."

Here's my take. I have a 'custom' Tabuk AEG. Why isn't it posted here? 'Cause the only non-K Mart part is the 21" barrel. Were I to re-machine parts of the receiver I'd say it had enough to be considered custom. 20% custom parts isn't really enough in my mind.
