Real Sword Type 56 Front Sight Removal

Postby Russkie » Sun Oct 23, 2011 4:54 pm

Hello, comrades. I'm trying to remove the front sight on my Real Sword Type 56, so I can install an AKM front style sight that I have. Thing is, I'm having some trouble doing so. Yesterday I went to go tackle the job with a 12 ton press and the T56 sight didn't move at all. We even dented the steel piece we were using to hold the sight still. Yes, we removed the pins and we heated up the sight.

So my question is, how do you remove this darn thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If i were you, i would leave it since you dont want to damge your gun and it probably works fine.

I'm not asking for advice on whether or not I should remove my front sight. I'm for help on how to remove it without damaging my barrel. Thanks.

I suggest magic.
According to RS they used the interference fit.
Ones this method is done "... even large amounts of torque cannot turn one of them relative to the other; they are locked together and they turn in unison."

Knowing this seems like the only way it can be done is to pull it off
Or according to some Real Steel sites press it off, but its not recommended but seems like you've already tried and it didn't work.

Maybe you should just cut the top half off the sight?
Kick me. I go "Moooooooo!!!!!"

Grinding the sight off is an option, but I also run the risk of grinding part of the barrel. If I can't get a press to work I might have do that.

I still think that using a press is correct method. I feel that I'm just doing something incorrectly (maybe not applying some kind of oil or such) in the process. Maybe someone has some insight on this.

If it is on tight enough to not move at all, I don't think oil will help as it will not reach between the sight and barrel. Less you have some kind of magic substance.
My father once told me, "Some times all you have is a bullet and a prayer, don't miss."

True enough.

I think I'll try to hit it with the press one more time. If that fails then I'll grind that sucker off.

What about just replacing that whole outer barrel?

Are you pressing straight down and not at an angle? A 12 ton press will snap airsoft parts...

Take a dremel and with a cutting wheel cut all the way until you are near the edge. Then with a chisel you can break through the rest of the site w/o marring the barrel

I'd have to mill the barrel out to fit the Hop-Up unit.

Nope, it was straight down. We were careful not to break anything. The guy doing the pressing repairs and makes parts for really old Jaguars, so he's got some experience with the press. He decided not to go any farther because he said there was a good chance we would bend or break the barrel.

Thanks for the tip on cutting the sight off. I'll probably end up doing that.

Cept the Real Sword isn't made with crap metal ;)

Russkie, have you considered just cutting off the parts that don't look like an AKM front site? It might be easier.

I don't know what it looks like, but you might be able to chuck the barrel up in a lath and turn (cut) it off that way.

The dremel with a cut off wheel is a really good idea also.

Again no knowledge, but could it be screwed on and maybe has a left handed thread?

Just a few ideas.

Stubby out.

Indeed Real Sword metal is very nice. Yes, I will be cutting off the parts I don't want since I don't need the parts and it seems to be the easiest way.

I doubt the front sight would be screwed on since I've never heard of any AK having a sight that is screwed on. Never know though. Either way, I'll be cutting the parts off and then hopefully for installation of the AKM ones they'll just press on (unless the sight is threaded like you said).
