PAINT-JOB FAIL

Postby Hutch » Sun Feb 05, 2012 8:34 pm

I got my CA M15A4 Carbine (blowback) and after a few games the paint started to wear off. I thought it looked cool at first, then realized that it was becoming a problem.
I attempted to apply a coat of flat-black paint over the worn areas to hide the scratches until I could figure something out. But then, I saw that the paint came off, and it for some reason, took off the paint that came with the gun too. now I have a SILVER M4!!! WHAT DA FAWK??? :?
How do I fix this? I dont want a silver M4. I want a normal flat-black one! Hell I was even thinking about getting a sweet paintjob on it!
What the hell do I do?! :?:

That's what happens to real AR15s. You use them, the "paint" wears off.
Just apply a new coat of paint occasionally. It's cheaper than getting some fancy baked job.

MCnair. I tried putting paint on it. It just comes right off, like water. It took the other coats off too.

The paint is failing for what ever reason, you cannot just paint over it and expect it to be good. You are going to have to remove the paint, prep the raw metal, and then repaint it. There are several good article's on painting small parts like your gun. Google it. Make sure that you use a high quality paint or you will be back at square one. Prep is majorly important also. Take your time and do it right.

Here's an article that I wrote for my father in laws business. http://www.martyenterprisesoforegon.com/tips

Hope this helps.

Exactly. I use Krylon and I get normal wear on spots that are in constant contact and edges where normal wear is from rub and contact, that's about it.

some people ask: "What kind of paint is it?"
I tell you this;
There is no brand on the label. It just says "fast dry SPRAY PAINT"

Get a scotch brite scuff pad, or some 0000 steel wool. Remove every pin, screw, part that you can from the body (it's not that hard), scuff the body, not necessary to remove all the paint. Get into the corners really well and outside edges.

PREP THE GUN WITH A GOOD DE-GREASER!!! if you do not do this your paint will not stay. I use anything from rubbing alcohol, to plastic prep i get from the local auto paint store used to clean door panels and stuff before paint.

Hang your parts in a warm area, spray lightly about 6 to 10" away, several light coats with a few minutes of flash dry time in between until coated completely. Let dry for several hours.

I use krylon ultra flat camo paint. I've painted my gun and after 10 skirms with it i've only had minor scratches.

Also, make sure to tape up the magwell and don't spray inside of it.

Make sure it's clean and use Krylon Ultra-Flat Camo Series.
