For a dirty look, go play the game and get your gun dirty. Jesus Christ.

Use sandpaper, a sponge and spraypaint. Done and done.

Some people say to remove the factory paint with the denatured alcohol, like what was done to that M4 I linked below, but that wasn't done to my 416.

You do it right, you end up with something like this;

Here's an AK that's undergone this process, which now makes me want another AK for an insurgent kit;

I seriously flinched and shuddered seeing those. They look:

a: Very well done.
b: Like a SMaj is going to pop out of nowhere and start screaming about how standards have slipped, somebody's mother should have flushed them and kept the placenta, and something about ripping out their first-line leader's useless skull-bone, and using rancid goat milk as lubricant and violating the many and various orifices of the owner of those weapons with said skull-bone until Jay-zuz Himself comes back down to this miserable shit-hole and intercedes on the behalf of the sinner while showering the SMaj with gifts of nubile and willing young lovelies and ice-cold Coronas.

Primer on the bare metal. I can't stress this enough, unless you want to get a powdercoated gun.

PREP THE GUN WITH A GOOD DE-GREASER!!! if you do not do this your paint will not stay. I use anything from rubbing alcohol, to plastic prep i get from the local auto paint store used to clean door panels and stuff before paint.

Hang your parts in a warm area, spray lightly about 6 to 10" away, several light coats with a few minutes of flash dry time in between until coated completely. Let dry for several hours.

I use krylon ultra flat camo paint. I've painted my gun and after 10 skirms with it i've only had minor scratches.

Also, make sure to tape up the magwell and don't spray inside of it.

I'm going to try this. Thanks.

THANK YOU! it worked perfect! the trademarks are a little harder to see, but the gun looks a lot better now. :D

Try some stuff called "gun scrubber " to get the metal absolutely clean before you do any other prep work. be careful not to use it indoors as it is carbon tet ( long chemical name) ( nasty stuff to breathe). You can get it at Bi mart in a spray can, the new version is supposed to be synthetic safe for use around plastics, give it a try to solve your adhesion problems. There may be something lurking in the pores of the "metal". Lord only knows what kind of metal is used to make the receivers, old tire weights? :D

I just stripped and re-painted a metal body the last few days. I gut the gun, remove any little bits i can, and use acetone (only on metal don't use on plastic) and a rag. I got tired of how long the rag was taking so i swapped to 0000 steel wool :) yeah, bare metal. Was a whole lot faster for me being impatient.

I then cleaned it with alcohol and re-painted, paint holds well, smooth finish. I am thinking about ordering some dura coat tho for a more durable finish than krylon.
