I like John Lu, he's a great guy. I'll have a beer with him at Shot Show any time. I can see that he really cares about and enjoys the hobby. That said, there's absolutely nothing proprietary about Lion Claws events that the promoters in this area cannot do themselves. But I suppose that's true about any game and any promoter.
If you are on the fence about whether or not you can afford this event, or whether you
should afford this event - talk to people who've been to LC events. Don't ask a sponsor or somebody helping organize the game, just ask the players. I really hope that Red Storm makes a bigger splash than Tradewinds and I wish LC the best in success at the event, but I don't think I'll be attending and I doubt I could drum up any interest from APST.
I'm 1 for 4 right now. If all the games were like LC 11, that would be amazing. I loved that event, it was one of the best I've ever attended. Unfortunately, 3 others were not. Whatever they did at LC 11, they should just do THAT every time.
Also, I wrote an AAR of OP Tradewinds with some gameplay notes, there's some really good opinions in the replies there if you're curious to read others' experiences of an LC event:
