Rust Prevention on the Real Sword Type 56

Postby Russkie » Sat Sep 18, 2010 1:21 am

So I'm starting to have problems with rust on my Type 56. I have been using steel wool to get it off, but the rust comes back in a month or so and gets worse each time. I was wondering if there is anything I could apply to the externals in order to stop the rust.

Thanks.

Have you try silicone lubricant Steve?
Do you store your AK in the basement & always in the bag? if so, try to put a little bag of silica gel in the gun bag, it helps to keep the moisture out.
But i thought AK suppose to be rusty.. :)

Stephanovich! greetings from Salem. When you use steel wool, to get that damned rust use as fine as you can get, 0000.
I use a gun wipe cloth called tuf cloth , It is coated with CLP and it does a pretty good job of protecting the guns surfaces. I try to use it every time the gun gets used. Sweat is as bad or worse as a source of rust. I have used many type of gun cloths, This is the one I like best. Just throw one in your gun bag, then its always there. If you have any trouble finding them let me know, I'm going to order some more from Brownells.

yea do both, store it in a dry place in its box with silica gel, and everytime you finish a game just clean it like you would a real gun, clean out the barrel, and dust from interior, then put a light coat of oil over any moving parts or metal, but dont use gun oil in mechbox, use silicon oil.
YOU SIR!!!!...... DO NOT HAVE ANY PANCAKE MIX!

A light coat of paint and primer would seal it up for you decently. However, if you don't want to paint it, perhaps dry it up and put a light coat of oil over it when putting it away. We do a similar light coat of oil on aluminum aircraft propellers to help prevent corrosion. While your gun is steel, the principle is the same, oil keeps moisture from getting on the metal and corroding it.

DJ's advice on using the finest steel wool / abrasive pad you can buy is spot on. You only want to remove the corrosion, nothing more.

Adding some silica gel to the case you store it in would not be a bad idea either. And make sure that sucker is dry before you put the oil on it.

Wow, I'm not alone in the rusty situation. My CA Blowback M4 is constantly rusting on the bolt and the dust cover. I managed to stop the rust on the gas tube by de-rusting it and using WD-40 on it (with the lower assembly in a different room). I tried the same thing multiple times on the bolt and the dust cover (both removed from the gun) and it didn't work for lang. Although, now the rust isn't to as bad of a degree as it first was.
Please, I insist.

I saw videos on Youtube showing how to paint airsoft guns and most use Rust Oleum Universal all-surface spray paint (depending on what color you need) on their airsoft rifles. I also saw Krylon spray paint being use. I haven't had any rust problems yet but I believe putting proper amount of spray paint should seal the metal surface from getting rust permanently.

I agree, it should seal the surface, but the problem is that you'd have to want to paint your whole gun basically. Anodized finishes (or whatever finish is on your gun) and paint finishes (even if it is a gun paint) do not blend into each other. I do get what you are saying, but in my mind, AKs shouldn't be painted.

If you paint it, the Krylon camo line is the best. Trust me I know from experience. But just putting a very light coat of oil on it should keep the rust away.

LOL, Pickles....

Anyway thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. DJ if you could get me some Tuf Cloth for me that would be great. I'll pay you back at a CAG training or other event of some sort.
