What does Part #2 do? Mine does not have that part, instead being wrapped in teflon tape.

I'm assuming the last gunsmith to have it apart (a reputable one on this forum) did this? When I got it back from him, it worked fine...for 2 days. Now the old problem is back--velocity has dropped to about 250 fps (from 380).

Oh, I get it now. The clip is what keeps the hopup and barrel together in the right place. That explains the barrel/hopup unit "wiggle" probably the resulting pressure loss when the teflon tape "fix" finally wore out and the barrel could move slightly out of alignment. Sound reasonable?

Yes. The clip constrains the barrel from walking forward. If the barrel moves forward or rocks you'll lose seal between the nozzle and the bucking.

Those little phony pony c clips break all of the time upon disassembly. Even when I am being cautious I can break one from time to time. They don't cost much of anything but to have to ship one sucks. Most other c clips from most name brand weapons will work. NOT ALL but most.

I actually left my clip off in my l85 to reduce my FPS to in game legal. Accuracy seems to be unaffected...

Ogre: The scenario you described seemed spot-on. If the barrel was just taped in, as soon as the teflon tape stretches you'll lose your air-seal and FPS will drop.

Airsoft Outlet NW has those clips available. $2/per in store or $7 for a pack of four available online.

I believe those AONW clips you are describing are the madbulls?

Nice beefy clips, very tough. But getting your hop-up unit to slide into your upper receiver might have more resistance than usual, because the madbull clips stick out just a little bit and rub against the receiver a bit IME.

Cool. I'll add them to the order I'm putting together. At $7, you might as well have a spare or three.
