Echo 1 Ak-74 CGW Fuse fun

Postby Willamor » Mon Jul 05, 2010 2:58 pm

Ok I found a very similar post on here but it was over 2 weeks old and I did not want to post on a dead topic.

I have a blown fuse in my Echo 1 Ak-74 CGW. It is not a normal size fuse and radio shack locally did not have a replacement.

Here is the Digi key spec for the fuse
FUSE 20A 250V 5X20 T-LAG GLASS. as you can see it is 5 mm by 20 mm a normal fuse is 6 mm by 32mm.

Any thoughts on where in Portland I might get this (price is excellent at digi key 80 cents apiece and wait what shipping is 30 bucks lol). The small fuse holder fits well (not sure I could get a regular fuse hold in there and the stick battery). Also yes I want to keep the fuse.

I would check Napa. If you can find a Fuse that will fit in it and is 20a or more, then you are fine.

I forgot to mention that I tried Baxter Auto Parts. I will swing by Napa and see what I can find.

@Willamor: if you have a spare larger fuse laying about, here's a possible fix if you've got the patience/finesse. Basically take the larger or longer fuse, break it and take the filament out. Then very carefully open up the ends caps of your old fuse. If you can do that then you can either crimp the new filament over the sides then put the caps on, or solder the new filament to the insides of the caps (I find poking a hole in the end caps makes it easy to set the filament in before soldering). Its good for a quick fix if you have the parts available and don’t want to wait to get a new one. Just make sure the filament is either the same thickness or thicker, otherwise you’ll end up with another busted fuse. Hope this helps.

If it's that difficult to get your hands on the 20a tube style fuse...what about swapping it out for a connection that handles 'car style' fuses?
You can find those practically everywhere...

I had a fuse blow out in my M4 as well. I went to my local Fred Meyers in Tualatin and I bought 10, 20A fuses for $4. They work like a charm.
