The squads allow for a more efficient command structure. Basically: it gives the commander more control over everyone because he can talk to 5-6 people, who then spread the word to the members of their squad instead of talking to 60 people at once. Also, it splits the force up into "teams" so it's easier to say something along the lines of "squad one cover the right side" instead of "you guys over there, go cover the right side"; it makes everything run smoother.
