Discuss anything and everything here that's Airsoft related.

Use an AK, and build it with some ROMY wood. Or look for some older east German stuff to put
on it. Paint the AK up with strange colors and Write on the stock of it.

weapons

Postby Jerm_G » Tue Nov 16, 2010 12:21 am

In my experience of collecting weapons from insurgents in Iraq, you never knew what you would find. I found home made shotguns, AKs, SKSs, British 303 Enfileds, lots of mosin nagants, G3s, MP5s, glock pistols, browning hi-powers, Chinese and Russian pistols, British WW2 pistols, grease guns and more. Talking to a buddy who ran an armory that did weapons destruction in Iraq, said it was like a blast the worlds history of war. He said he was cutting stuff down that hadn't been issued to troops in over 60 years. In my experience is that if you are talking about Iraq, Afgan, and Africa, anything is game. Just loose the optics and 1913 rails.

In Southeast Asia there are a number of XM16E1s/M16A1s from the Vietnam War. The common thread if there isn't a war going on there now is what were they using in the previous war. So, when the Soviets first showed up in Afghanistan they were being fought with Lee-Enfields and the like. When we showed up there they had AKs.

The Abu Sayyaf Islamist Separatist Group and MILF (Yes, that is the real name of the group) based out of the southern philipines is often seen using Captured/Stolen Armalites/ M16A1's as well as M60 Light Machine Guns. Along with the typical Ak-47, Type 56 Rifles.

Also, do not forget that many third-world countries have had sponsorship from outside powers, so that means gear from almost anywhere. Was it ever confirmed that we helped arm the Taliban (or whatever their name was in the early '90s) to fight the Soviets? I know it's been disputed both ways, and the last I heard was yes, but that means that old U.S. gear can be out there. Also, as was stated above, when a militia fights, they are seeking an advantage - be that locations, stolen gear, weapons, ammunition, etc. They don't care about serial numbers, cost, etc. if it's stolen.

Bottom line, if it goes bang, and has been used in that field, there's probably some of it out there.

The aid we gave them hardware-wise was missiles. Stingers and redeyes and Russian strellas iirc. We gave them money to buy bang sticks, but the goal was deniability. No m16s.

My source for this was threat briefings in 2006. Mostly it was to reassure us that the stinger units, if still out there, would have degraded to useless a decade before we got there.

See Steve, this is why we keep you around. I would love to have a few hours to just talk with you about stuff like this.

Don't take it as gospel, mind you.

I ran into a lot of stuff in the 'stan, but it was mostly com-block. Some old-school enfields though.

M-platforms require too much work to maintain for most of the guys we were working with / fighting against. I'd love to meet the jackass that thought it was a good idea to equip the Afghan Army with M-16s. That dude was a class-I tool.
