10 tips for new airsofters

Postby ogrejager » Tue Nov 16, 2010 4:13 pm

First, I toyed with a different title for this thread, "10 ways to not make an ogre want to SMASH!" but opted for one that was more helpful.

After 2+ years of playing airsoft, I've accumulated 10 tips for new players that want to go to an OP and be helpful, but aren't sure what to do. I finally got around to writing them down after LOW got me thinking about them again.

Second, those of you with years of experience--that's fine, ignore this. Or not, maybe it will make you think of something. Third, why post these--because better overall players make for better games. Fourth, yes, I'm aware that the people that need to read these won't or will ignore them come the game. I wrote these up as much for personal therapy as anything.

Fifth, what the F does some new guy know about playing airsoft--he's only been doing it for 2 years, he's just some newb. Sure, to airsoft. Ask John Vida when the first time he saw me was. Ask Dan Bonebrake who was there one of the first times he went into Splatman's store in Salem. Also, ask Dan who ran teams in the GWS and other tournaments. For those of you who know what an autococker is, I have one that has the serial number “468,â€

Very cool. As much as you would want them to read this, the best way to get them to follow these rules is to lead by example.

Other Advice for newbs i think, Show up to trainings, show up to light skirms and practice these! PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

I think you forgot one that Vaughn brought to my attention and that is shooting while moving.

If you don't mind Ogre-

11. Shoot while advancing! It keeps heads down and allows you to gain ground. When the enemy sees that aggression they will want to fall back, especially if you are moving up in numbers while moving and shooting. I witnessed along with Vaughn that even experienced players would just end up sitting in one spot once the bb's started flying. Not only does that get old, it doesn't gain anything either. You can shoot fairly accurately while walking properly and all you have to do is keep heads down.

Another tip: I know you may like hand signals and think they are cool, but they have there place (When you need to be quiet/sneaky). When you are pinned down I think they know where you are, so verbal communication is much more effective.

I wouldn't put that up there.

Shooting while moving is not as effective if you're moving fast. There can be times when you're moving and a target comes up that you *have* to shoot, but by and large you should be doing smaller bounds and having someone else provide the suppression fire.

I agree. It's better, generally, to MOVE and concentrate on that, while someone who's not exposed provides your suppression.

If I may:

12. Noise. Noise is your friend and your enemy. If you're advancing up and they don't notice you, watch out for things like twigs and stuff that will make you louder. When you're attacking, go loud and proud. Two guys on each side of a position screaming their heads off as they attack is a great way to get the targets scared and confused. Also, keep in mind that your guns are noisy as well. Don't fire unless you want them to know where you are. But, if they know where you are, fire as many guns as you can. The fun thing here is if you're in a place where they can't see you well, firing multiple weapons for each person will provide the enemy with the impression that they're fighting more guys than they thought. Which leads to the next bit.....

13. Deception. This is harder to pull off in the limited time spans and distances of airsoft, but keep in mind they're paying attention to you. As said, fire more weapons than people. Shout out that your gun is down when it's not. Shout out orders when you're alone. Announce that a place is clear when you give a visual cue to your buddy that it isn't. A confused enemy is an enemy that's easier to beat.
