Hey all, I was about to make another purchase on my Combat Machine M4 and put this(clicky) and I was wondering if you guys think this is overkill to put ontop of a Carry Handle Rail on my M4? I didn't want to have a zoom of over x4 because this is airsoft and that really would be overkill, or have a sniper scope because thena gain that's just silly. standard M4s aren't snipers. I would get an ACOG, but the price is pretty expensive for one and I want to use my Carry Handle rail.

EDIT:Anyone who've shot a CM M4 would know its gets pretty far distance, at the SniperZden feild I was able to shoot from the barn and it was able to travel farther than than the length of the barn, which anyone who've seen the barn is pretty far.

Your thoughts?

IMO, scopes on assault rifles are annoying. Mostly just because of the eye relief, and you probably don't need zoom. I find red/green dots very helpful, got a decent one for $45 on ASGI.

Well since I would be using a Carry Handle Rail, I can switch from my scope to my ironsights. Which is pretty awesome. So honestly I really don't need a red dot or anything with a x1 zoom.

Mounting a scope over the iron sights makes them very dark. Scopes can be useful, but really just for identifying camouflage more than anything else. I've more than once used a Colt carry handle scope on the M4 I used to have and liked it, just that it made the iron sights very hard to use.

Kinda like how much of a pain it is to use the irons on a M14 wit ha scope on top>?

I think depending on what rail you use, the iron sights can work incredibly well. When I had my m16, i had a fair height rail, and it could make the sight dark, which make seeing through it a lot easier. I think its personal choice on this one. Personally, I didn't like having such a high cheek position to use the scope.

I used to run my M4 with a similar setup, although I never really used the iron sights as I rarely use my sights in engagements < 100ft.

Scopes mounted on M4 carrying handles have great eye relief, you can even use full face-masks comfortably.

Aimpoint and a magnifier? I don't use a magnifier when I've used an Aimpoint.

Or use iron sights...?

This is actually a good combo. I guy I know is using an Aimpoint and magnifier on his ACR, and it actually works very well.

Really? Hmm, I've been looking into them.

But this isn't about me, it's about him.

My personal preference for red dots is Aimpoints, I think they look cool, and have great eye relief. They're also often level with the iron sights, which I use along with the Aimpoint. I personally would love an ACOG with a zoom, but an Aimpoint with a Magnifier would be good too.

Not sure if you ever mounted a ACOG ontop of a Carry Handle Rail but that shit is crazy, for real.

Anyway I honestly don't think I would need a reddot of anything x1 magnification if I already have the ability to switch from the scope to Iron Sights

Im pretty sure he meant get an acog with iron sights on top, thus you can mount the acog on the receiver and use the irons on top when needed.

Although not a big deal for airsoft, cheekweld is sort of awkward with a scope raised that high. At least for me it is.

If not flip-over magnifier + AP, maybe this sort of scope?

Also, I'm beginning to sense that money is a deciding factor in this. Most setups that allow you to efficiently have both a 1x and 4x capability are relatively pricey.

My take is this. Using the iron sights under the scope is not going to be easy, especially with what you'll be using it for. After all, the Iron sights will only be used in short ranges, correct? It's going to be pretty hard to acquire a good sight picture quickly, as needed in short ranges, with a scope mounted on top. Furthermore, keep in mind you lose some of your peripheral vision as well with a scope blocking your way.

Personally I'd stick with a 1x magnification only option, unless you just want the look of magnified optics. At longer ranges, typical AEGs are only good for AOE fire, not really necessitating the use of magnification. I only find that it would aid in target identification, nothing more than that.

I just want to try that look for the time being. If I don't like it then I can just start working it off. But during Holy Wars my friend did let me borrow x2 scope and I loved the combo of a zoom scope and ironsights, best of both worlds

Smart cookie. Money is a decided factor.. Though after relooking through the catalog I found this(clicky) which seems it would work better looks and functionality wise. Since the scope being smaller I have more viewing area (with my peripheral vision) and it won't look completely goof with a huge scope ontop of my M4.

I didn't like magnified optics on assault rifles until I tried it, and now I use a 4X ACOG.

I'd recommend the ACOG for looks, but that scope should work fine.
