Switching to Deans, need some tips

Postby Pancake » Wed Dec 29, 2010 7:40 pm

I have 60/40 rosin-core solder, but I feel like its too thick. The kind I got says .062" Diameter Standard, am I good to go? Also, my Soldering Iron is only 23 watts, will that be enough?

Other than that some tips would be nice.

Thanks

I've sodered thicker with a less powerful iron.

I've done this a couple times. There are a few things to keep in mind, the first is patience. When I wire to deans I usually tape the connector down. 23 watts should be enough, if it isn't to melt the solder then you will want some thinner solder. Also use shrink wrap, it makes the connection look clean and professional. That's all I have.

use a heat sink to keep from melting the plastic. Use the tip of the iron straight down you can localize the heat better that way."Tin" the end of the wires first, you will get a better result. practice, you will mess up 1 or two, but you will get it down, oh dont forget to put the heat shrink on the wires first

This. I kick myself every time I do it. I've soldered on dozens of Deans and I still forget about the heat shrink every once in a while.

Here's a good vid to get you started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rruTqtl6 ... re=related

After that, it's just practice.

Rasin core solder sometimes isn't enough. Dip the soldering parts of the deans in flux, then solder.

Pre-tin. That is the most important thing you can do when soldering electronic items. This guy is a great resource in the RC world, and he has a video on how to solder Deans. Check it out, and again, pre-tin!
