LiPo Disposal

Postby Jester316 » Sat Jan 29, 2011 1:29 am

Does anyone know the proper way to dispose of a lipo? My AONW 11.1 1300mah stick pack shorted out and developed a hole into one of the cells where the wire goes in. The pack didn't explode, but a liquid does ooze out with slight pressure. I don't know what to do with it (I cut the wrapper off to try to fix it, but there is no way I can).

Dunk it in water so it explodes in your gun then clean up the mess and toss it ;)

Or throw it in the snow.

That worked, sorta.

How did it short out? I know you can call your local recycling hotline and they could give you an idea where to take it

I have no idea what happened. I was firing my M4, when I heard a fizzling sound. Immediately took the battery out, stuffed it in a metal ammo can and put it outside (I didn't close the lid all the way so it wouldn't blow the can up). Pack didn't balloon up, and the deans connector wasn't working. So I cut the case off, and found the hole. I thought it was just a wire that came unsoldered, but nope...

Target has LiPo recycling containers just inside the main entrance.

Wow, makes you wonder the cause. I recently had a fairly new one of those LiPo's take a dump at which point I stopped using it for fear of issues.
Thanks for the info Carl, never had a clue Target offered that.

Your local Best Buy also has "rechargeable battery" recycling, although I'm unsure if they're taking LiPo batteries. Can't hurt to check.

No problem Packman, I found out through Chesty because he works there. I needed a place to dispose of my LiPo after it got shot at LOWI. The security guard at Target did a double take as I walked into the store with what could be mistaken as C4 plastic explosives, lol

Throw it at a wall.

As some few have said, there are some retailers like Home Depot and the like that have recycling containers. Dump it in there.

There's always "toxic waste day". My dad gets so exited every time he hears about it. He throws away old paint cans and car batteries and other nasty things. It may not be to convenient but it is an option.

I might expolde it at the fire station to really see what a Lipo can do. If I do, I'll definately film it for your flaming pleasure.

Put it in a micro wave, with a can of hair spray and stand back. And watch to see what happens. ;)
