FPS

Postby ducks4t » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:12 pm

I plan on getting a G&G GR 16. They have about 330 FPS. I was wondering if that would be enough for woodland airsoft wars. Will it be able to make the far shots i take accurately?

It all depends on the internals, everybody is going to tell you about how good TMs are... Yet they don't have that 380-390 fps that most people want. Your Combat Machine will do just fine against all the other replicas out on the field, and as will be stated, fps =/= accuracy.

If you want a more accurate replica, save some money and correct AOE, re-shim, and improve the compression on your replica. After that, upgrade the bucking, nub, and barrel to see the most noticable affects on the replica.

As I'm sure you will hear, it is not about the FPS in an AEG. The distance will be more strongly dependent on the quality of air seal in the internals. Focus on getting a good cylinder, piston/piston head, air nozzle, and a hop up that fits well with the air nozzle. A PDI internal barrel seems to be the best choice, but with a GR 16, a madbull 6.03 will be sufficient.
Good Air Seal+Decent enough TBB+GOOD QUALITY AMMO=distance and consistency

Leave it at 330, you should be able to get it up to 350-360 with getting your internals tuned just so.

(I think it is fair to say this about any replica, but thats just my personal opinion.)

Also, if you know what your doing and have the parts, within the first week that you get your replica the thing should be tuned up. Just get it out of the way before it ends up having a plastic spring guide or bushing fail on you...

My TM AK shoots 270. It still slays bodies.
Just means I have to get a little bit closer.

 Yeah....I would stay away from the gearbox until you have to open it, unless you do it all the time. Just throw a tight bore barrel in it and new bucking. It's a simple job to do and there are online guides on youtube to show you the way. You can gain 10 to 25 fps and increase your accuracy/range too. And there's not so many small springy parts involved that shoot across the room and get lost.

While many guns are great out-of-the-box. Almost every gun can be improved to make it the best it can possibly be. In order to do this you WILL have to upgrade the internals and as others said tweak your gun as necessary. Its just a fact of the matter.

If I have to upgrade it then i will. But without any upgrades, will it do a good job in a woodland battle. Or should I keep looking?

Don't worry too much about the gun, just be aware of the fact that you can advance an extra 20 feet instead of spend an extra $35 to get the accuracy you want.

It should do fairly well, i prefer a higher FPS but thats just me.
Ont the plus side: you will be able to use it for CQB.

Nothing exceeding 350 FPS is necessary anywhere. A good hop up paired with a 6.04-6.05 barrel and a madbull blue bucking will be fine. Most manufacturers that have higher FPS are compensating for terrible accuracy and compression by installing a higher rated spring.

My 2 cents

For me it is more than preference. A higher FPS allows you to fire a heavier BB. A heavier BB has more inertia and so is less affected by wind and other elements. This increases accuracy and hitting power.

It may do OK outdoor depending on the conditions and the hopup. Don't expect everyone to notice getting hit though their gear though. At least it's not at 270 FPS Crikey! Most high end GBB side arms are at 330-350 FPS.

Last time I chronoed my super old TM AK it was shooting 218... I still slayed bodies.

I got more kills with my CA SCAR that shot 270fps, with stock barrel/bucking combo. If you know how to tweak it (or use a stock TM) than lower fps is better (IE: quieter, more ROF, less stress...).
