TM AK47 fps? The risk?

Postby Icepick » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:45 pm

So I'm not going to go into detail about how I acquired a TM AK47. But what I'm concerned about it how well it will take a spring that shoots around lets say 350-370, or what about a spring that shoots at 330-350? The gun as of now shoots at about 250-270fps, which is just too low for me. (And for anybody to even feel a bb.)

(It HAS been reccomended that I do not to open the gearbox unless I want all the little fairys to fly out and make the gun less accurate. And I DO NOT want to cause harm to anybody or anything by increasing fps, I just want people to feel the impact of the bb, etc.)

Contrary to your misguided belief, people feel hits at 270fps. How do I know? Because I used a CA SCAR that shot at 275fps. I got many many kills with it.

TM guns are awesome. Don't mess with it. Ask Kendo about the time we slingshot his AK across Scappoose.

I need to set up a Coke can "chrono" and see what it does to it, it might even be lower than 250-270. I just don't feel confident using a gun that is shooting that low, but I guess I'll take it to Oregon Airsoft, shoot some kids, and see how well it performs.

If you aren't confident with a gun that shoots that low, you need to reevaluate your choices in airsoft.

My old "socom" m14 (CYMA) shot 275 when I downgraded the spring, and then I upped it to ~300 via compression fixes. It worked at 275FPS, but at the ~300 stage it was a dream...

My TM G3 was 330FPS stock, actually.

Kendo's AK shoots just a smidge above 200 and he's killed more men then the plague.

My TM SIG 552 shoots about 230, and doesn't afraid of anything.

if 250 FPS isn't enough for you, become a better airsofter.

To answer your question. A stronger spring will accelerate the wear and tear on the gearbox. You'll essentially be shortening it's lifespan. Every time you open the gearbox you manipulate the aspects of the build that gave you the initial performance: Compression mostly.

Basically, don't shazaam with TMs. They perform fantastically until you open their gearboxes, and then they die. My TM MP7 is my always-backup gun - while I don't like using it too often because it's a little too tacticool for my tastes anymore, and it only shoots like 210 fps, it gets kills at really long range for that FPS. TM guns are made well stock, plain and simple.

The past few games I've used an 8 year old TM AK shooting around that area and I've had no trouble slaying bodies. Sure I don't have the range of some other guns, but what I do have is an almost unparalleled reliability. It has not once failed me.

So I guess I'll just run it over with my car, or burn it, since it is a peice of junk right? ;)

/stupid

But since this does pertain to the Ak, does anybody know about how you tighten up the front assembly, handgaurds, and stock? And my front triangle sight is loose, anything I can do about that? The set screw doesn't seem to hold it in place very well...

We used to upgrade our TM guns all the time back in the day. All they needed was metal bushings and a new spring to shoot 350 reliably.

Fairys will only fly away if I open up the gearbox right? Will anything bad happen If I just remove the gearbox from the lower receiver?

I also have done some more test firing, and the gun appears to shoot the same FPS as a backyard springer... And the accuracy isn't anything to write home about, I think that somebody might have let the fairys out of this already.

EDIT: The fps does seem a lot lower than 270, the max I wanna put this up to is ~300-330 with .20's. So are my TM internals going to die if I bump it up a little bit? Or can they handle it just fine?

Don't bleeding touch the gearbox.

the 270FPS will work wonders, as it does for everyone. Just accept that your gun doesn't shoot super hot.

So I did a can-test, and using .20 bios I was able to puncture one side and leave a dent in the other... But keep in mind this was with a Coors light beer can. So it probably isn't the same results as with a Coca-Cola can (the standard.) If you can get the same results on a Coca-Cola can that I did with the Coors, then the gun is supposed to be shooting 290+ FPS.

I also tried to shoot through a layer of cardboard at point blank, it put a dent in the cardboard but didn't go through... So this might actually be shooting 270fps, I will do more testing and find out.
