Trigger response...

Postby book42 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 9:34 am

Hopefully, this doesn't come off as too ignorant, but I'm interested in knowing more about "trigger response". I have 2 AEG's- a KWA and a SOCOM GEAR DANIEL DEFENSE. They both shoot fine, and run exceptionally well on Li-po's (I even did a few upgrades on the SOCOM, thanks to Airsoft Outlet NW), however, the KWA's reaction concerning the trigger is crisper, faster, and somewhat tighter. Whereas the SOCOM- a very competent shooter in its own right- feels muddier, slower, and less responsive than the KWA. My question is, what effects trigger response? Is it motor, spring, gears, battery... or a little bit of everything.

Thank you for any and all help.

Best regards,

You might want to swap your stock wiring out for some 16awg wire and solder on some deans connectors instead of your stock tamiya ones. Usually, decreasing electrical resistance helps improve trigger response time :)

a motor couldn't hurt either, but unless it bugs you a lot im not sure i would even bother. i assume you are using the lipo in both guns? the higher voltage batteries will make a huge difference, but it may be too much for the SOCOM depending on what upgrades you've done.

also, what you are witnessing is probably mostly the difference in quality between KWA and SOCOM gear.

Good electrical connection is all about surface area (of contacts) and pressure (between contacts). Deans connectors will work wonders. Also, a high-speed motor and a good shim job (which both rifles probably already have) would not be a bad idea.

The SOCOM gear (VFC) guns come stock with EG1300 motors, which lacks trigger response and ROF compared to many other motors.

Switching over to a high torque will increase the trigger response the most. Dean connectors, new wiring and MOSFET not so much, those are more of ROF “upgrades”.
My most favorite high torque motor of all has to be the Dream Army Ultra Torque Motor, it is also sold under a few different names such as the SHS Ultra High Torque Motor and X Tech Turbo Motor

To give you an example of how good the Dream Army Ultra Torque Motor, or whoever makes it.
My friend is achieving instantaneous trigger response with 39 RPS shooting ~390 FPS on a 11.1v 1200mAh 20C G&P lipo, that’s with standard ratio gears and no other modifications.
And to quote Jawz of 1st-sword;

It's a beast with a super-strong neodymium magnet that easily runs at 30+ RPS on an M120 spring with enough amps!!! I'm loving it--obviously. With a 7.4V LiPo, it still gives around 21 RPS!

Just today I bought the SHS high torque motor from someone at a game; I can’t wait to try it and compare it to my Matrix 3000 high torque.

When I hear "muddy" to describe an airsoft trigger, I think actual metal contacts in the gearbox. You may have to pinch the metal contacts closer together to get better contact out of them.

Long story short, put a high torque motor into the Socom Gear M4. I recommend the G&P M160 or M170 motor.

You know, I was playing around with that idea today and I think I'm going to try fitting a spacer behind the contact to shorten the time it takes for the contacts to touch

Just an update as to comparing the SHS Ultra High Torque Motor to the Matrix turbo 3000.

Boy, these motors have strong magnets! I dare to have any small metal parts around the motor or have it get sucked into the motor itself!

Gear box:
Stock JG new gen gears
8mm ball bearing element gearbox
SHS air nozzle
Stock VFC tappet plate
Stock VFC ver. 3 cylinder head
Systema metal piston head
Dream Army metal tooth piston
Unknown brand spring ( shooting 370 FPS)
SHS ball bearing spring guide

Using a Hot Power 1700mAh 11.1v 12c lipo:
Matrix turbo 3000 gave 22 RPS
SHS Ultra High Torque Motor 31 RPS!

Again because these motors have strong magnets, they give instantaneous trigger response.

Thanks everyone. I knew I'd get a wealth of information from this group. The only upgrades I've done to my SOCOM is a tightbore inner barrel, and I swapped out the springs to make it game legal (the thing was firing above 420 fps). Yah, using lipo's in both my KWA and my SOCOM.

I'll research these motors and make a decision.

A lot of my old team members have the SHS motors. Really nice Motors i must say.
