G&G M14 Veteran spring question

I've been to two events, ResIII and the recent LoW, and this replica and it has clocked in around 425fps each time. Between the two events and use in the backyard, it has had around 8000 bb's fired from it. So, I assume it is broken in and will continue to fire around 425fps with .20's.

This is a little hot for the events and I would like it to fire around 400fps. The box says it has an M120 spring in it. Looking over the spring guide, I should be able to put in an 110 spring and end up with it shooting just under 400fps.

First, any thoughts or comments about this? Second, is replacing the spring something a first timer should try or I'm I better off taking it to AirSoft Outlet NW? There seem to be quite a few videos out there showing how to do this, but it sure seems like there are a lot of parts to remove to replace the spring. Third, is one brand of 110 spring better than another?

Yes, an M110 should put you where you want to be.

I recommend taking it to AONW (I do work there), and Jesse is the man to guarantee that your gun ends up in perfect working order.

While you can learn to work on guns yourself, there is a learning curve. You'll learn from your mistakes, but your mistakes may end up in either parts or lost performance until you figure out how to put them together perfectly.

Try leaving the piston cocked back for a few weeks, it may weaken the spring so it shoots slower by anywhere from 5-20 FPS. I would try this before you take it in somewhere, as 8000 is like a few hundred miles in car speak for an AEG.

I’ve worked on AEGs for about 5 years now and cracked open hundreds of AEGs I can safely say unless your gun has a quick spring change feature, which I can tell you the G&G M14 Veteran does not have, because I’ve worked on them before, I would not take it apart and attempt it yourself. As Commie said above I would take it to AONW. (see this list for guns with quick spring change feature)

Although I’ve worked on the G&G M14 Veteran and consider it a somewhat easy AEG to work on by no means would I recommend it to be your first gun to take apart.

Not necessarily better, just different. Different brands give slightly different FPS, look around at different spring charts to find your favorite one.

On fully automatic when the piston is in the rear position mid cycle. I do NOT recommend doing that as I tried it with one of my M4's for a week and saw no difference at all. I recommend just getting a new spring, I personally like the Guarder SP110 type.

Leaving the spring compressed can have some effect on a brand new spring, but on a spring that is already broken in with a few thousand rounds, it won't make any noticeable difference.

Wear is put on high quality springs through compression and decompression cycles, not from constant compression.

Also, I recommend Modify springs.

Thanks for the help. Clearly the best answer is to replace the spring and probably best to have AONW do the work. Looks like there is a road trip in my future.
