First project gun. Need some advice.

Postby AndyC » Sun Jul 17, 2011 7:26 am

Hi all, I recently picked up a project gun so I could start learning how things work internally. The gun is a Matrix M4 Challenge Kit, the sportline with the metal reciever(USMC Markings). Anyway, the gun does not shoot properly. I never expected it to but, in looking at the gearbox, I noticed that the air nozzle doesn't slide over a metal tube on the cylinder head. The head doesn't have the tube at the end. The nozzle looks like it slides into a groove and just sits there sort of loose and wobbly. Every head I looked at has that small tube on the end. Are there some that do not and, is this a typical nozzle setup? Thanks.

Here's the cylinder head as best as I can get a shot of it. Have not opened the gearbox yet...not that brave at the moment.

What happens when you shoot the gun? Does it fire at all?

it's off n' on. It will shoot a BB every few trigger pulls in semi and on f/a, it will do a burst of maybe 3 or 4 and then nothing.

That cylinder head is broken (or just made wrong). The misfire symptoms are exactly what my buddy was experiencing in his G36 when the 'tube' your missing broke off of his cylinder head.

Or, silly question - is it installed backwards? Don't even know if that's possible - but that pic looks like the impact pad for the piston is facing out, rather than the barb for the nozzle.

That's whats weird about it. If you look at the head, there's a groove along the bottom of it. The nozzle slides right into it like it belongs there but it also just falls out so I am thinking the barb piece is missing also.

the nozzle sits in the tappet plate and slides along the usually brass tube that protrudes from the cylinder head. your cylinder head IS broken, sir.

After doing some searching and watrching some videos, I concur. You are very correct sir. At this point, would it be better to just get a whole new cylinder/piston kit for it or just replace the cylinder head and air nozzle?

I'd grab a new version 2 cylinder head and an air seal nozzle while you're at it. The brand Modify makes stellar versions of both.

OK, ordered a new cylinder, cylinder head, nozzle, piston, piston head and a ballbaring spring guide. I'm gonna try this....first, anyone have a good tutorial page on how to grease all the gears/other parts and what type of grease/lube to use? Thanks much.

Open it up before you buy anything... I'm seeing what looks like brass on the inside of the cylinder head. It very well could be backwards (although I'm not sure it would work...).

Wait, you didn't need to order a new cylinder, piston, piston head, and spring guide if the only problem is the cylinder head, also I use ICS silicone grease in my gun. It is 7 $ for a big can of it. Works good in my gun.
