What's wrong with this mechbox?

Postby ogrejager » Wed Aug 10, 2011 9:14 am

Rifle: KWA M16.
Symptom: Motor spinning, nothing else.
First try: adjusted motor height, no effect.
Second try: Adam looked at it at the last event briefly and said, "Stripped gear."

So, I took it apart, expecting to see a nice, easily noticed screwed up gear.

Instead, I see this:

I see nothing notable broken, but I can't claim to be an expert. The piston, not visible is fine.

Never mind. When I took it into some sun, it became obvious. That gear in the second picture is so completely stripped, I didn't notice it was a gear.

You gotta love AONW. Called and said, "Hey, I need a part but I don't know what it's called."

Adam's reply, "Yeah, I saw the picture. I'll go pull it."

Thanks, guys.

When I first saw it, I thought you were missing the bevel gear... I thought to myself, "how exactly does one lose a gear without opening the gearbox?"
Then I saw the second picture.

just make sure you get all the little tooth bits out of there before you close it up, you wouldn't want one to get in the cylinder, or wedged in a gear.

And here I thought, KWAs were known for being reliable, good quality guns... Reminds me of that time a guys trigger literally snapped off during a game...

Implying a gear stripping makes a gun not reliable.... It happens.

You run a 11.1 lipo and put 30-40,000 BB's through your gun, and we'll see what problems you have.... Go away unless you have something helpful to add. I don't have time for you kids.

Snapped trigger? That sounds like one of those replica/ground interface issues to me.

Congrats, you have a stripped gear. Welcome to the club. :D

Might I remind you, if you do not replace the bevel gear (the gear that it stripped in the second picture) with an OEM KWA bevel gear your gearbox will sound noticable different and you will have a devil of a time shimming it. Also keep in mind KWA gears use no shims when installed in a KWA gearboxes.

You'll notice, if you read the entire thread, that the replacement has already been shipped.

Yes, I got an OEM gear.

I read you had a replacement shipped, but didn't know if you got an OEM.

Under what condition was this gun running at? upgrades? RPS? FPS?

That's what I keep telling the kids. They don't listen.

Yeah, he got an OEM gear shipped.

I think he's running an 11.1v 3000Mah battery or some such insanity. The guns go great till they don't.

for some reason, your post only loaded the first image for me. when i saw the picture coupled with the title "whats wrong with this mechbox?" my first thought was "well THERES your problem, your bevel gear has gone awol." then the second image came up and i kept reading.

that's whats great about local shops that are part of the community. i bet adam saw this post that morning and thought to himself "i wonder when ogre will be calling?"
