MOUT FPS Question

Postby Phoenixcompany » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:42 am

We are both an indoor and outdoor field so it seemed appropriate
.
At our M.O.U.T. facility we engage with rifles at 40-100 feet and our pistol ranges are 10-25 feet. Though we would like some feedback on minimum engagement distances indoors with pistols. We have been experimenting with our own team shooting center mass and lower at 5-10 feet on semi with pistols and to be honest...it has made the CQB more realistic and hurts less than some AEGs at over 25 feet. Any thoughts?

Thought 1: Real capacity magazines only

Thought 2: No FPS limit unless based on safety (so 500fps max for all weapons)

Thought 3: Failure drill on new guys.

Re: M.O.U.T. Distances...

1) Allow players using rifles shooting under 330 FPS to be used indoor and outside. A player with a rifle shooting over 330 FPS should use a handgun inside structures. You will have to differentiate the two. (different colored zip ties) Don't forget to chrono handguns, some of the newer ones can shoot over 330 FPS. 5 to 20 ft. engagement range with a pistol, is usually acceptable.

2) Since it is a MOUT field allow the use of 400 FPS indoor and outdoor, but with a warning to players. "Play inside at your own risk" Safety kills and pistol kills are a courtesy, and not always done. Shooting center mass is the prefered way of shooting, but not always possible.

3) keep doing it the way you already are. It's really a matter of what you feel is safest for your players.

Thanks for the feedback. Some of these things we do currently, colored zips, chrono all weapons, etc. and I think we will experiment with different groups too (walk-ons, teams, vets etc.) as experience "usually" means safety but there are always exceptions and I've seen noobs be safer than vets.

Anyway...can you define Failure Drills?

If you're running this like a business, you'll probably have to choose between 330 fps (gets the people out who are afraid of getting shot) and 350 (a lot of people's guns are designed for 350fps). Also note that I think the "standards setters" are saying 350fps for indoor and 400fps for outdoor are what should be the norm.

The zip ties thing is mainly for outdoor fields. If you have a choke point to check weapons before they go in, just chrono'ing and having attentive staff should be fine. Saves money and lets people forget that they're all using toy guns anyhoo.

And a failure drill is when you shoot twice in the chest and they don't go down so you shoot them in the head. A failure to go down, so you have to pop them in the brain. Kind of like a zombie?

ROTFLMAO! Seriously...that was similar to my old field's safety speech: Please aim for center mass...if you double tap them and they don't call out...the must be zombies. I hate the Undead...shoot em in the nugget!"
