There easy to make, but when they will regret it on the way out... after finding the meals for hiking, MRE's loose their appeal completely. mainly because the hiking meals are about $4 each, only need a little boiling water, and don't clog the digestive system.

I don't know what everyone is talking about, but I've never had MREs stop me up. The chili ones do give me some Nazi gas, but anything with beans in it does that normally so I don't blame the MREs.

Scared, if your ever in the Lakewood area, the surplus stores by JBLM have MREs for about $6+WA tax.

The chicken with noodles one is the best IMHO.

Chili mac and chili beans are my favorite, if anything you don't shit for a few days until I got used to them. Just pack a lunch.

if you can't $h!t you could use the gum that comes with the meal, sugar free gum has small amount of sorbitol which is a laxative, but you need to eat about 15 packs/sticks of gum for it to show effect

The one MRE I've had was maple sausage. The sausage part sucked; but the rest of it was surprisingly good.

I've never had digestive issues from an MRE either. I don't know what everyone whines about. Maybe I just have superhuman bowels. I've never had one I didn't like the taste of, either. It's never going to be great food, but it's not meant to be great; it's meant to pack you full of calories so that you can fight without succumbing to malnutrition.

For one offs you can get MRE's from your favorite Surplus store. The drawbacks are that you are not sure of their remaining shelf life, you are limited to their selection and they tend to be pricey. The only MRE I thought was discusting was the one where the oil had seperated from the meat in the entree. It smelled a bit racid to boot. Hmmm tasty. Ham Loaf was my favorite.

In the past, (15 years ago) I have ordered MRE's by the case from Long Life Depot (http://www.longlifefood.com/mre.asp). Order full meals or components, select what you want. Get your buddies to buy a few cases with you to get volume discounts. All shipped to one locale. You deliver to your buddies. A case of 12 meals is about $95 for about $8 each.

If you just want a tough ready to go meal see YouTube. There are numerous videos on how to make your own MRE's. With the use of tin cans they will weigh a bit more but the advantages are you build what you will eat, cut out some of the packaging, you probably have enough stuff lying around the house and can probably make them cheaper. If you are carrying one or two the weight will not be harmful.

Some of these home made MRE videos cheat and make you heat water to reconstitute parts of the meal. Real men don't need hot food so hot water is optional. Having water is not optoinal, hydrate.

If you are heating water then a freeze dried camping meal would be an option. If you want to go cheap then Top Ramen is hard to beat. A pop can alcohol stove heating a canteen cup with two cups of water to make Ramen is about a cheapest hot meal you can have.

You can have hot MRE's. Either heat the packets in water, engine top, inside vest pocket or use a MRE chemical heater. The chemical heaters work great if they are not old. I had one not work once and ate the MRE cold after wiping off the chemical sludge. I guess that heater got smashed to pulp in my car trunk, or the bag got a hole that deactivated the chemical or something. It just didn't work. However when they do work they get so hot you can barely handle them. Using the chemical heaters add cost and delay to the meal.

I was there the other day, and they do indeed carry Military issue MRE's. They also have civilian versions for less, and also individual parts of the MRE for sale. The M.I ones are around 10 bucks, the civvie ones around 9 or 10.

MRE's... I don't understand why you'd want them unless you are forced to have 'em, but the magic of 'em probably has just been worn off with me. Too expensive for horrifying 'food.'

Love MREs, lived on them for a weekend and didn't get tired of them. I loved the Shrip Jumbalaya.
