Beta Project AK mags not feeding/fitting?

Postby STRIK3 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 3:10 pm

A while ago, I got some of those new-fangled Beta Project Bulgarian 5.56 AK magazines:
Image

I'm trying to get it to work in my G&G GK99 (replica of a Valmet, but the receiver is the same as any other G&G blowback AK). The problem I'm running into is that there is very slightly too much travel back and forth, the mag does not seat quite right and will not feed. When I hold the mag and pull it firmly backwards (towards me when the gun is shouldered), it feeds inconsistently but drops BBs when the mag is released (as it should).

I brought the gun to AONW on Saturday and Childs and Abe there recommended adding material to the magazine to make it fit more tightly at the back. I tried it by shimming first the mag, then the top of the mag release with thin strips of electrical tape, which did not make too much of a difference. 1 strip of tape made no difference, 2 strips made it so the mag wouldn't fit in at all.

The other recommendation I received from a teammate was that I could try dremeling part of the mag where it locks in to the magwell, the theory being that the mag sits too snugly in some areas which makes it seat crookedly. I used my knife to file down the tabs first on the front and then on the back, and once again, it did not seem to make a significant difference.

Does anyone have any experience with these mags and has run in to similar trouble? Is there something about G&G AKs being picky with mags that I don't know about? Otherwise, they are very nice mags and I'm reluctant to part with them, I'd really like to make them work if I can.

To McSexy here:

What I'm getting, the mag doesn't sit properly in the magwell. Have you tried placing tape directly inside the magwell maybe?

I don't know, as I too have never had this problem.

Also, If he didn't buy them from AONW, He wouldn't be able to do anything in terms of returns.

But he did get them from AONW as he is a lazy bastard and has to buy local.

If you want, I can take another look at them Strike, when we're at a game. I could barely see in the dark how they were seating, so we'll see.
Please, I insist.

the 2 reviews on ASGI both mention it wobbles, the only gun that seems to work well is the beta project tactical AK, but i think the tactical AK is designed to only take the magpul mags they don't accept a lot of other standard AK mags

Ben looked over it at the last training, he was the one who recommended dremeling. Also, I'll need the gun to work at the next game this weekend, so I'm kinda frantic to find a solution this week.. I'm going to go back to the outlet later this week anyway, I can have them take another look at it. If all else fails, I'll just buy some different mags or borrow some from one of my kind and generous teammates :D

Problem: Something wobbles in an airsoft gun.

Solution: Tape.

Jesus, is it really that hard to figure out?

I suggested the same thing Ben did, before him, too, if I recall.

Not everyone can make a half-upside-down AK out of tape and Cypher's spare parts bin and still have it work well like you.

I've fixed many guns besides just the AK with tape. It works well and is cheap.

Besides, my AK works right side up (sometimes).

@VogonFord: I tried tape both on the top of the mag release and on the bottom of the tab on the back of the mag (where the mag release lever rests on the magazine when it is in the magwell). It seemed that the mag release wasn't putting enough pressure on the back of the mag to make it sit correctly (the fact that the mag begins to feed a bit when the mag is pulled back suggests to me that it needs to be pushed up into the magwell more at the back). Depending upon how much I used, tape either made no difference or made it too tight so the mag wouldn't fit or lock in to place.

Sounds like you might have run into similar straights? Where did you tape up yours specifically?

I'll try to post a couple of pictures in the morning.

Does it have this issue with only these mags? I'm wondering if your hop-up unit is too narrow or possibly a bit out of seat with the GB.

FWIW, Cosmos has one of those mags and didn't have any issues with it in his Dboys 74, or mine.

The hicap that came with it works fine (obviously) and I used some of Russkie's MAG AKM midcaps at LOWIV and they worked as well, although he told me the other night that he also had to modify them a bit to get them to work in his Real Sword AK.

ZOMG IMAGEDUMP

Image
The mag supplied with the gun is on the left, the Beta mag is on the right.

Image
From the side. Supplied mag is on the left, Beta mag is on the right

Image
The Beta mag in the receiver. There is no movement side to side, but the mag can be pulled *slightly* backwards towards the shooter. When this is done, the mag feeds inconsistently.

Image
Detail of the magwell, sans magazine.

Image
Another view of the magwell. The magazine release is visible to the left. I applied a layer of tape on the top of it to try and make it hold the mag in tighter, it didn't seem to work.

Image
Tried modifying one of the mags to see what would make it work, nothing did. Pictured is an unmodified mag with notations.
