Holster placement

Postby Shiloh » Mon Jan 16, 2012 9:55 pm

So, after about six months out of the loop, I'm starting to gear up again for some more airsoft after finals are over. I'm going to be picking up a GBB pistol sometime soon in time for summer, but I've got a bit of a problem with the holster. I'm running a weesatch knock-off, with a dump pouch on the right side of the vest at my 3 o' clock since I shoot rifles lefty, and that's obviously where the dump rig would go in that configuration.

But the problem is that I shoot pistols right-handed. So if I put a holster in the conventional spot (belt at about 3 o'clock or on the vest in that same location) my DP would be in the way. Is there any way around this? Or am I going to have to just flip the pouch out of the way every time I go to reach for the secondary on my belt?

Put the dumper on the back of your belt, as close to the pistol as possible without interfering with it.

That, or keep the dumper where it is and mount the pistol SOB, as you're likely gonna be using the dumper more often.

If you're wearing a chest rig/plate carrier, you might just attach it to the center of your chest.

Something like this:

Both excellent ideas, guys, thanks!

Mcnair- How does that SERPA (if my meager knowledge of holsters is correct) fare when it gets dirty? I've heard horror stories of guys trying to rip a Glock or 1911 out of one when they accidentally rolled in the dirt.

No idea. That's just the first picture I found with the setup I was thinking of.

I've tried running my sidearm on my chest and besides the weird as shit draw, I found it'd get in the way of shouldering my gun.

First, I'd try mounting your dumper in a different place. Try the back panel of your PC or on the side buckles.

Can you run a drop leg for your sidearm? It depends on what works best for you, but I've found that a drop leg is the best place for me due to my monkey arms.

Also, what sidearm/holster are you looking at?

I keep my handgun on my belt by my right a$$ cheek, and my dump pouch on my left (I'm right handed). I've found it near impossible for my arms to reach the dump pouch when its directly behind me. I'm not a fan of droplegs because they just get caught in doorways and make it harder for me to leap over cover. Maybe you could try a crossdraw method, so place a right handed holster on the left side of your vest. It's a pretty simple draw

Throw the dump pouch in the trash, mount your secondary in a SERPA drop leg.

I second the cross draw method. That's what I have and it's really comfortable, doesn't get in the way of anything, and is super easy to draw.

What is your style of play / combat? If you go prone a lot, front / vest mount is a royal pain and the pistol gets in the way / picks up debris. An actual SERPA ( BLACKHAWK!) is pretty bombproof (and expensive). not so sure on the knockoffs. a drop leg platform will likely give you the most flexibility. A cross draw type set-up is great in vehicle mounted operations , a scenario unlikely in AS. For what its worth, a leg mounted drop pouch works pretty well tool.

Just use an extra pouch. A solid MBITR pouch or M4 mag pouch work great. I've done so for a long time and i've seen photos of operators doing the same. i've never had issues with it and i grow prone a couple times a game, sometimes running and diving to the deck. You just have to be aware not to slam a plastic pistol on a hard surface.

My kit using an MBITR pouch.

SERPAs are expensive? I paid $35 for mine and have had it since 2009...

As for bomb proof, some people think they are the worst thing since AIDs was discovered: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_5_10/11991 ... Serpa.html

I love my SERPA. I wear mine at 9'oclock due to being lefty. Ditch the dump pouch. BDU cargo pockets work just as well, and they don't get in the way of shit. Drop your mags to the ground, deal with the threat, then pick them up.

Jester, your continual sarcasm/air of omnipotence tires me. Please go price a complete leg rig/holster/mag/light holder set up. If you want to carry the $35 holster in you hands, by all means. I have actually used the thing in real life conditions, It is not necessary for me to go to some web site to solicit others OPINIONS.

DJ, no where in your statement did you mention leg rig, mag carrier, and light carrier.

http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Sports ... 6,1410.htm

That's a $34 SERPA holster that mounts on your belt and will work just fine. So please, continue to be an asshole. I'm not a mind reader. Make your statements more definitive, so that way people know what the shazaam you are talking about.

As for the opinions on AR15.com, you'll notice that I'm one of the few who posted in favor of the SERPA.... So you can go shove that shit up your a$$.
