KWA SR10 Modification

Postby vibora » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:49 pm

To get straight to the point, I just got a KWA SR10 and I'm looking to "upgrade" some of the externals and internals. There are two main modifications that I'd like to make:

1. I'd like to quiet down the motor noise. Though this thing is as solid as a rock internally, the motor is one of the loudest motors I've ever heard. I want to drop the FPS down to about 330-350 fps (w/ .2s), so that should solve a little bit of the problem, since the motor doesn't have to work as hard. (right?) However, since the stock KWA motor is supposedly the biggest weak point on the gun, I'd like to replace it altogether with something else. I don't know a lot about motors, although I've heard good things from all my buddies who have G&P in their guns. I also took a look at the narrow Systema motors that are in their PTW line, although I doubt that there is a way to fit the narrow motor and grip on a non-Systema gun. Any suggestions?

2. I've been running a 10.5" barrel on a different gun; I love it and want to throw one on the SR10. I like the stock RIS a lot, but I can't figure out how to take the damn thing off to replace the barrel; it is likely one of the most overbuilt external parts I've ever seen on an airsoft gun. I also can't find anybody who's done the mod so I can ask them. I can't even find a guide on how to take the RIS off. None of the retaining screws come out, the outer delta ring retainer won't budge, and I've heard you need an AR barrel wrench to get the actual delta ring off (although finding such a wrench shouldn't be hard in AZ). Has anyone seen tips, a guide, or a video on how to remove this thing?

I just put a SR10 Rail system on my M4-RIS and I love it. The way I got my rail system apart was to get a pair of channel locks with a rag and put that on the the ring at the base of the rail. Have someone else grab the rail itself and twist.

Once you have that off you will need an armorers wrench to get the delta ring off. Once that is off just switch the barrel out and do the inverse.

Post us a picture of the finished product, I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

Cheers and good luck.

Do I not need to remove all the little aligning set screws then?

2) To remove the SR10 barrel and rail, you'll need to unscrew that big gnarly nut. It's normal thread, so left-loose. As mentioned above, if you can't get a grip on it, a double or triple folded rag plus vise-grips or robo-grips may help you get a hand on it. After that is loosened, the rail system itself will slide forward off the AEG. Next, you'll need a Barrel Wrench to remove the barrel nut. The little pins will just come out once the rail is off, and you'll re-use them when you put it back on. With the barrel nut off, the barrel just slides out of the receiver. Put your new barrel, like the Daniel Defense 10.5 Inch back in, and reverse the process.

TIPS Be very careful when torquing on the barrel nut, you can easily break the front receiver pin hole on the upper of you try use the body for leverage. The best bet is either vise the rail system or use a real receiver block (look for it in tools sections on AR websites. You may want to discard the gas tube and/or choose not to reuse the gas block, depending on your preferences.

1) As far as the motor, I think the KWA motors are fine. It's loudness is probably related to motor height adjustment. Try that first before you replace it. G&P motors are good, but I've had really awesome results with the AIM Top Torque Motors, especially for the price.
