G&G GR16 Gearbox issues

Postby Toolbox » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:53 pm

I just bought this gun used a week ago.. Was working great with no problems, pulled it out yesterday to do some target practice and the gearbox is locked up.

When I attempt to fire the piston compresses the spring but the gearbox doesn't rotate enough to clear the piston and allow it to push forward. I have taking the gearbox apart a half a dozen times to no avail.

Things I have tried-
It originally had a ball bearing spring guide. Thought maybe it was too thick, swapped it with a CA spring guide I had..

Reshimmed the gears

Swapped out the spring with a new Matrix M115 spring

Swapped the motor with a CA high torque motor

Tried 3 or 4 different batteries, even an 11.1 lipo.. Thought maybe it needed more power to compress the spring.

At my wits end with this .... Any Ideas? Thanks in advance I can post pics later when I get home if it helps

a few pictures would help, is the anti reversal latch put in correctly?

I would take it completely down first. Remove everything and shim the gears alone, make sure when the two halfs of the box are screwed together (with only the gears) that they can spin freely. This will let you know if it's a problem with the gears or a bearing.

Then put in the trigger bits, rotate the gears to make sure the sector gear isn't hitting the cutoff lever part of the trigger.

Then put in the cylinder and piston, rotate the gears to make sure it's getting proper contact with the piston and pulling it all the way back to where it would release it.

Then finish assembly and try again with a battery. If it's still not working with all that, and you can't see what it's doing, get some incense, an Ouija board, and try and get rid of the demons ;)

Good luck.

Look for wear marks on all the parts. It sounds like it's hitting something. Look at the piston also and make sure it's lined up when installed.

Also, seems stupid, but double check your motor connections and make sure they are tight, check and make sure your wires aren't showing bare spots and making a bad connection.

One thing that has helped me in the past when a gearbox wont work quite right, just keep taking it apart and putting it back together again, sooner or later something falls in place :)

Thanks for the help guys... Finally got it working. I had tried two different motors, the original G&G and a high torque classic army. I found a Gold Eagle High Torque motor I had and put it in and it work perfectly. Guess the other two motors just didn't have the power needed to complete the cycle. Thanks again

I would double check the shim job, because that's what it sounds like to me.

same. take your time with it, one gear at a time. The previous motors you were using should not have had a problem turning that setup. Forcing improperly shimmed gears to spin with higher voltage or a stronger motor is going to break something else down the road.
