For the utmost in range...

Postby Grease » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:31 pm

What the heck should I buy?

I know there's a whole lot that goes into deciding the range of a gun, most of which is some sort of upgrade after the initial purchase, but what would be a good base platform to start with when building a longrange AEG?

My initial assumption would be that longer guns = better, but I'm not sure.
For a while, back before it started falling apart, my old CA M4 had a pretty impressive range. I could turn the hop up and stand outside most people's range, but still be able to hit them.

(And yes, I know someone will come in and want to slap me for starting another DMR thread. But have you tried digging through all the locked DMR threads to find one that's actually useful? :p)

1.) Buy G&G gun
2.) Do these mods http://airsoftsniper.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=aeg&action=display&thread=1291
3.) ???????
4.) Profit.

I did almost all those mods in my ASGI G4, and the range on it is very impressive.

I don't really care about looks too much - I just don't like wasting a lot of ammo, and I don't like getting out-ranged.

Putting together a decent DMR type gun seemed like the logical solution to both problems.

I thought that for a while, and ended up modding my M4 to the chagrin of my wallet. I would agree with Nasty that the necessary parts are a tighbtore, metal hop up, and a new bucking. If you want to go all out, add a bearing piston head, bearing spring guide, and an M120. After doing that to my G4, I did a lot of DIY air seal mods, like teflon tape around the end of your hop up, wrapping the barrel in teflon tape to prevent movement, and sealing the end of the cylinder.

If you have money left over after all those things, rewire your gun to 16 gauge, add deans connectors, a mosfet, and a high torque motor to improve trigger response.

If you're interested in knowing exactly what parts I used in mine, just let me know and I'll list them out for you.

I Have an old trade gun that I upgraded just like pseudoanimosity said. The secret is perfect compression in your cylinder/piston/air nozzle assembly and a good hopup bucking, unit, and nub

I have:

bravo hopup unit $34
KWA 2gx bucking $16 (get a harder nub)
510 mm 6.03 tightbore $40
Oring air nozzle $16

and alot more...
...but these four things hop up, bucking, barrel, and Oring air nozzle basically everything that touches the bb. You can also get heavier bbs. I have a stock CYMA AK, and with 380 fps and .30s It can go over twice It's original range.

The heavier you go the more momentum you have IE distance and with the hopup better grouping, BUT you loose fps IE speed.

To get good compression all you need for temporary is teflon tape and you can get Orings for your piston at ACE. Just try out a few, not all pistons like the same oring.

On .30s my friends g&g m4 gets just as much range as my DMR but his Fps is alot lower and his grouping is just as tight only because of his 6.01 and G&G hop up

So unless you want a longer gun just get a good hopup bucking and barrel
and mabye some .25s or .28s (.30s are a little expensive)

Just don't think FPS = range my friends 230 fps TM MP5 can outdistance my 320 E1 SCAR because of the hopup.

For building an accurate AEG, follow the guide that psuedo posted as closely as possible with your choice of weapon, remember your goal is to increase tolerances, so things that are loose need to be shimmed or tightened.

Length of barrel isn't as big a factor as most people think; I had a CA AR-10 with a 6.03 madbull barrel and madbull bucking, but my CA M6 (mp5 length barrel) with a PDI 6.01 and a KWA 2G bucking can do circles around it.

Which leads my to my final point, part quality. A lot of people on here are fine throwing in a Madbull barrel and bucking, but as I have a little more money and extravagance, I have found that PDI 6.01 barrels and KWA 2G buckings make a killer combo.

FPS only comes in to play for BB weight. The faster your rifle shoots the heavier the ammo you can use which will lend to better accuracy and the ability to push through brush better.

You also want to shoot for consistency. A rifle that is shooting all over the place in FPS will lend to inconsistent shots, so breaking the rifle down to the gearbox and making sure every seal is perfect is ideal.

It's a lot of work and $$, but with some patience and skill you can have an excellent plinker.

Hope that helps

Once again, read the previous posted link!

Can you provide accurate, empirical evidence to this? Like, benched, equal range, 10 shot groups?

Otherwise, it's just an opinion. Opinions, as I'm sure you know are asses....

That's basically what you want to do. at Fallout last weekend I chronoed my scar at 406, 406, 407. That kind of consistency is what you strive for because you want the hop up to strike the BB the exact same way, and have the bb leave the barrel the exact same way each time, so that there (in theory) is no variation between your shots.

Don't expect to end up with a 1 moa grouping at 50 yards, but if you can shoot 10" groups at that distance, that's all you really need for airsoft.

the parts I put in my G4 were:

KWA 2gx bucking
madbull 455mm 6.03 tightbore barrel
King Arms full metal hop up
Modify spring guide w/ bearings
G&G Piston head w/ bearings
CA High torque motor
rewire to 16 gauge
Extreme-Fire Panther-SW MOSFET
Deans connectors
Modify M120 spring

In addition to these things, you'll want to seal your hop up and cylinder the way the guide illustrates. Also, shim your gears to improve ROF and trigger response.

I still run the stock ratio G&G gears for a high RoF on full auto in case I get bored laying in the bushes.

My battery of choice is the Tenergy 20c 1600 MaH 11.1v LiPo. You can get these on Amazon for around $35. If LiPo's aren't your thing, you can get a custom pack built at http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com for around $20-$30.

Inner barrel length doesn't always guaranty range and accuracy.

I have a few longer guns, KWA M16/SR12 and E1 M28. The M28 is stock, the M16 has a 6.03 and the SR12 has a 6.01. They KWA's are consistent at 150 - 175', but start to get unreliable after that distance. I never know what to expect from the M28. It's turned into a nice looking wall hanger. All IB's are 500mm+.

In defiance of expectations, my CA 2009 PMC-X, with a 363mm 6.03 Madbull, consistently get's single shot torso hits at 200'. My SR10 with Edgi 6.01 hits pretty regular at 175', but still can't quite match the CA. A well tuned hop/bucking combo should trump IB length in the real world. And an M4 length gun will be lighter and easier to move around the field than an M16 length gun.

Just to be a little evil and confuse your decision making process a bit, last Friday I picked up a KWA MK23. With a 130mm 6.05 inner barrel, I can easily hit my 150' testing target, using both Power Green/King Arms green gas, and .25/.3 KSC BB's.

Range? Forget about AEGs and go Classic BV system w/LRB. I can do 75 yards w/.28s shooting 260fps.

If you want another example you can look at my TM G-spec with a PDI 6.01. It has a 303mm length barrel it is shooting MUCH farther (250feet) than most AEG's that have longer barrels.

I'm just saying, good quality parts may trump over all length.

Some people's are better than others?

I have read all kinds of crazy stuff both ways and from what I understand the barrel length does help but the diameter is considerably more important.

Again, individual observations things you've read on the internet are nothing.

Show me data or it's just vaporware.
