Switchback, I'm not too sure about that. MP5s are becoming more and more popular these days.
Magazine efficiency is what M4s do best, the amount of pouches out there for STANAGs is huge, and they're the easiest to get gear for. MP5s had short barrels, and are easily maneuverable, so they get shorter range (unless you know what you're doing with your barrel and hop up) and are less of a hassle. M4 mags are cheap, easy as hell to find, and are the most simple to reload. M4s themselves can also be very small and compact, and can be used in many different situations, just like MP5s, only MP5s can't really get longer.
MP5s are somewhat unique, but if you're trying to be a special snowflake, and they have a similar mag change technique as the AK, but they're nowhere near as useful an AK. With airsoft having that longer barrel can help a bit, but it isn't everything. An AK can have a full stock, a side folder, an underfolder, or no stock at all. They're the most comfortable and practical rifle to date, and I wouldn't recommend anything less if you're looking for something other than an M4 variant.
Remember a this, FPS =/= range and efficiency, so you can have a low shooting AK and use it for both outdoors and indoors. You should try and be efficient before you try to be different, though, so find a platform that works for you. I manage to be different by using Sig rifles, which are sort of like AKs but are more tacticool and modern. ICS and G&G make the best Sigs on the market, and I highly encourage them to be used if you're looking for something that's different. Sigs have sturdy folding stocks and come in many different shapes and sizes, such as the 550 (longest), 551 (second longest), 552 (same barrel length as 551 but with shorter handguard), and the 553 (short barrel, short handguard.) All of these platforms have folding stocks, and non-cumbersome rails that are built into the handguard, similar to what Magpul did with their MOE rails, so accessories can be mounted. They also offer the iron sights that HK uses, which are, in my opinion, some of the best. It's personal preference, but if you want an AK that is tactical and not ugly, a Sig is your best bet.
But if you DO want an AK, any AK with a folding stock will do you good as a CQC/field rifle, as they can be tuned to CQC but still shoot a distance.
